locknut wrench? by
Abeness
I went over to my local autoparts store today and they had no idea what
I was talking about when I asked for a locknut wrench for screwing a
Honda brake caliper piston back in. Didn't see anything on the shelf,
either.
Is the item linked below what I'm looking...

94 Civic: exhaust system replacement by
Abeness
Now that my muffler has broken off "Pipe B" and is dangling, it seems
that the time to do the exhaust has come 'round at last. I was told last
summer that my "Pipe B" was full of pinholes, but got this far.
I'd like to do the work myself to save a little, though really it's the
parts that are the...

94 Civic spark plugs: type and socket size by
Abeness
What size socket do I need for the plugs on a 94 Civic EX (D16Z6 engine)?
Also, I notice that the service manual notes two different plugs, one
the NGK ZFR5J-11 for "normal" driving, the other the NGK ZFR6J-11 for
"hot climates or continuous high-speed driving". My car is used mostly
for trips,...

94 Civic: low power in 1st by
Abeness
Just a recap of the various things to check in case of low power in 1st
gear (I'm asking; please correct me if necessary):
Run a couple bottles of injector cleaner through? Check plugs/wires,
replace at least plugs and maybe replace wires too--regardless of
apparent condition? PCV valve?...

Craftsman timing lights--which one? by
Abeness
Sears offers two "heavy duty" timing lights, one for $50 and one for
$70. The description of the more expensive one notes "0-60 degree
advance scale for more accurate and easy timing measure". Is this a
useful feature, worth another $20? Or will the $50 one be sufficient?
I've never checked timing...

1994 Civic EX 5MT: DTC 41 (O2 sensor heater) by
Abeness
Hi, folks. Haven't been here in a while. Combo of excellent previous
advice here that got me through a couple of repairs, plus the first baby
in the family--boy now 5 mos. and super cute!--and a move. ;-))
Anyhow, my MIL (check engine light) indicates a DTC 41. 128K miles.

car stereo recommendations? by
Abeness
I finally have to give up on the stock radio/cassette deck in my 94
Civic EX.* Any recommendations for a new car stereo system, or good
sites that review them? I don't need massive wattage or super bass, and
the ambient noise in a Civic is such that massive frequency range is
irrelevant. I hope...

removing duct tape traces by
Abeness
Had a window smashed just before a rainstorm a about a month ago, so I
taped some plastic in place with duct tape. When the shop replaced the
window the next day, they weren't careful about removing the tape, so
traces of the gum remain on the door.
Any suggestions on the best goop/methods to...

94 Civic EX: slight pull to the left at speed by
Abeness
It seems I may have a slight pull to the left at highway speeds. Does
not appear at low speed (e.g. <10 mph). At first I thought it might have
been the brake problem I described here recently, but it seems to be
present even after I checked the brakes, cleaned up the calipers some
and replaced the...

frame rust--how to fix? by
Abeness
I know absolutely nothing about body work, though I've used a sanding
disc and wire brushes before. I have rotary brushes for my drill, too.
I've got a bit of rust on the frame column between the front and rear
doors on the driver's side, around where the passenger door hinges
attach to the frame....

grease, clutch cylinders by
Abeness
I need to replace the clutch master and slave cylinders on my 94 Civic.
Any tips?
Does it really matter whether I get OEM from e.g. Majestic, or
aftermarket from the local store from which I *think* it will be
somewhat less?
I'm assuming that I need to buy the clutch master seal and cotter...

94 Civic: boot the clutch slave cylinder goes into?? by
Abeness
There's an additional rubber boot that covers the boot end of the slave
cylinder and attaches into the tranny housing. Since that isn't
particularly supple any longer I'd like to replace it while I'm
replacing the slave cylinder. I'm pretty sure it's the "release fork
boot" marked item #7 in the MT...

recommended antifreeze? by

Is there a commonly available antifreeze that's sufficiently
aluminum-engine-friendly for a 94 Civic, or is genuine Honda antifreeze

another grease question: bolt threads by
Abeness
I can use a touch of just any old grease to lube bolt threads, right?
E.g. the bolts attaching the slave cylinder to the tranny. Or should I
avoid this so as to lessen the risk of over-tightening them? I do plan
to use a torque wrench. While I'm careful, I sure don't want to run the
risk of...

Hydraulic connections (e.g. clutch, brakes) are self-sealing, right? No
compound for fear of contaminating the hydraulic fluid, and no

changing brake fluid, also ABS by
Abeness
I'd like to change the brake fluid in my 94 Civic with ABS, but I'm
unsure of the best method to ensure that all or most fluid is replaced.
It looks to me like changing the fluid in the ABS unit is beyond my DIY
capabilities. The bleeder T-wrench would cost $116, and the ALB Checker
would be $825!...

stuck caliper... by
Abeness
Confound it!! So I was all set to replace clutch master and slave cyls
today on my 94 Civic, and hit a massive NYC pothole on the way to my
friends' garage (level, enclosed). Shortly after the pothole I hear this
scraping sound from my left front wheel, worse when I braked.
So I get to the garage...
