Long, gloating, and by god I did it!!! by Don Bruder
Changing a tire... Not "pull the flat off and put the spare on", I mean "take the old tire off the rim and put a new one on." The guys at the shop with their umpty-hundred (or more) dollar machines make it look *SO* easy... In something like 90 seconds, they've got the old one off the rim, the new...

Brake Fluid for Cleaning Bolts? by Elle
Any reason not to soak old bolts in used brake fluid, wipe them with a rag, apply, say, anti-seize, then re-install? My concern would be the water absorbing properties of brake fluid. But if others routinely do this, then I won't be concerned. TIA

2002 Prizm faulty fuel vapor canister by [email protected]
I have a 2002 Chevy Prizm with 37,500 miles. My check engine light was staying on, so I took it in. I'm told my fuel vapor canister is dead, and it will cost over $400 to replace. My previous car was a 1992, so I'm not accustomed to these newer cars. While I've appreciated not having to do an...

Bad engine mounts, but who cares? by [email protected]
Just got a '96 toyota Camry from my father in law, 150K miles. Great shape otherwise, but it shakes like ten epileptics when idling in drive. Mechanic recommends replacing motor mounts, about $700 to replace two of the three. My father in law recommends just ignoring the shaking, or putting it in...

How Long Will Krylon Last In The Can? by phaeton
I know y'all are going to shoot me for this, but I've got paint issues on my truck, and don't have the means or cash to get the whole thing repainted correctly. Last year I had reasonable success sanding the flaking paint and rust off the roof and recovering with auto primer and flat black paint. ...

87 Dodge Caravan distributor test help needed please. by Mike Romain
My son has an 87 Dodge Caravan 3.0 auto and the spark up and quit. The old coil was cracked with low ohm readings so we replaced it just because. The coil is getting power, but it is not getting the negative pulse to fire it so there is no spark coming out. I have a good multimeter and need to...

Rebuilt engines - good or bad? by [email protected]
I'm looking for an older, inexpensive station wagon (Corolla or Camry, if I can find one). A lot of the cars I'm seeing have rebuilt engines, even when they're not that old ( a friend is selling a 1997 Escort with 97,000 miles and a rebuilt engine and transmission). Is a rebuilt engine a plus or...

What repair turned into a nightmare? by J J
I have had a number of used cars over 10 years old. Most things I repair take longer than i anticipated. Replacing the fuel injectors on a Datsun 280 Z was a nightmare. Dealer wanted 850 to do it. I could buy the injectors for $29 each. It took me about 7 hours working outside to remove and...

Filter for power steering? by Jim
I have a new car and would like to put a filter in the return line on the power steering, to promote longevity of the system components. (The system uses a long hydraulic ram, located under the car.) At same time, I may want to put in a cooler for the fluid - depending upon whatever advice I get...

Hooking up dual igition coil. by Sam Nickaby
I came across this dual coil and dual ignition module kit. The price is around a thousand dollar. This sound way too expensive. I want to build one for my own vehicle but I not sure if the secondary output of the two coils should be tied together. For instance, if I tie the secondary port...

Chrysler engines by
In order not to prolong the warranty thread, I made a broad statement the other day that Chrysler had always made good dependable engines, to my knowledge. I can't remember one that had problems with cracked blocks, premature wear, etc. The old slant six was good for a couple hundred thou,...

Exxon 5w20 oil for 5.6 Nissan Titan - Will it void warranty? by Jim
My daily commute has just increased (due to a new job) from 22 miles per day to 115-120 and I am now racking up about 900 miles per week on my Titan. Needless to say, with gas prices above 2.50 a gallon coupled with the thirsty V8 engine and heavy weight, I am spending a small fortune on...

Low tech OHV engines versus DOHC/VVT/FSI/Turbo/4-valve... by Masospaghetti
This is a subject I have yet to understand. It seems all reviewers dog overhead valve engine designs because they are "low tech and crude", or whatever they say. But are they really worse? Compare, for instance, the following engines: 3.5L OHV (GM 3500, Malibu) - 23/32 mpg, 200 hp / 220 lb-ft 2.0L...

Oil pressure sending unit by Julie P.
Hi, I am trying to diagnose a fluctuating oil pressure problem: 1) Does anyone know of an easy way to connect an oil pressure tester? I have this fancy oil pressure gauge made by K-D Tools, but you need to screw the end with the adaptors into the crankcase, in place of the sending unit. But there...

Can a few ounces of kerosene improve gas-mileage? by [email protected]
Have any studies been done regarding how a few ounces of kerosene added to 10 to 15 gallons of gasoline can bring noticable improvements to fuel economy? Included is a link to a product (a "combustion modifier of sorts") that was developed with support of university and applied tests....
