I used to buy tires from TireRack - now SimpleTire (how can they do it?) by
Jonas Schneider
For years, I have been buying tires from TireRack, opting to mount them and
static balance them myself at home.
This week, I called TireRack, to order a set of four passenger tires, where
I picked a traction A, temperature A, and treadwear 400 tire, with load
range 99 and speed W, where the price,...

the importance of thermostats by
jim beam[_4_]
someone i know recently demonstrated that their modern function is
apparently poorly understood.
back in the day, a thermostat just sat on the high side of an engine,
and opened when the coolant temp convecting around it raised enough. if
there was a problem, like the thermostat failing...

testing fuel pressure on a 3.3L 2005 Toyotal by
micky
(I don't think I have a fuel problem, but when I'm reading about my car,
curiosity rears its head and I have questions.)
How come so many cars have a nipple on the fuel rail with which to test
fuel pressure, but 2005 3.3L Toyotas etc. make one insert a T-connector,
iiuc underneath the rear seat...

2022 Anniversary Camaro Not Happening: Is 2021 The Last Year? by
Miguel Tomar Nogueira
Today we can report that Chevy has no plans for the 55th anniversary of
the Camaro in 2022. Chevy always does some sort of anniversary special
Camaro every few years. What’s so different about the 55th? Why is the
2022 55th anniversary Camaro not happening? Could it be that 2021 is the
last year...

Conventional oil hard to find? by
mike[_36_]
Kids are on spring break so I changed their oil & filters.
Bought Costco oil but to my surprise they no longer sell dino juice.
Bought Mobil 1 oil filters at Walmart but they also had no dino juice.
Went to O'Reillys but their conventional was more expensive than synthetic.
I had Costco look up...

On Topic? Cars, anyway: 55 MPH speed limit... by
Hachiroku $B%O%A%m%/(B[_2_]
It's interesting to see how many people in this group and others support
the 55 MPH speed limit.
The question is, where the hell are you on the highway?!?!?!
If 55 MPH is supposed to save fuel, and the speed limit is currently 65
MPH in most places, then why, when I'm doing my usual 68-70 MPH, am...

What's been the fastest speed you've driven so far, in a car ? by
Dan[_35_]
Irrespective whether it was your own (current or previous) car or
someone else's
(whether you were the one driving, or you were only a passenger,
doesn't matter),
what's so far been the fastest speed you've driven, without crashing
and harming anyone and/or also physically damaging the car. It...

Frugal auto transportation: theories? by
Jonathan Grobe
My traditional view of frugal auto transportation has
been to have two beaters: (a small car I use most of
the time and a larger vehicle for hauling larger cargoes
and for backup). I've given up on my small car (a 1984
Chrysler Laser with 265,000 miles and am considering
what I should buy next (I...

Tire Pressure Monitor by
Luke
I have a 2004 Cadillac CTS-V (w/ Corvette Z06 LS-6 engine). Recently, I had
my tires rotated, and now the display for the tire pressure is wrong. It
reports the pressure for the back tires as the front tires. The Cadillac
dealer wants $15 to "recalibate" the system, but I'd like to do myself....

Oil and Filter Change by
Built_Well
I'm going to follow BadGolferMan's lead, and start
changing my own oil.
There's a great CD-ROM that comes with the book
"Auto Upkeep - Basic Car Care" by Michael E. Gray.
On the CD is a great checklist of things to do
when changing your car's oil.
Here it is:

on the inside pad. But, the outside pad had much more wear. For the
outside pad to operate, AIUI, the piston pushes the inside pad against
the rotor,...

Current-ish model 4-door Impala (2007, I think, though conceivably an

Alcohol as a fuel by
JP White
I went on business trip the Brasil last week. Pretty much all the gas
stations sold alcohol as a fuel and at most if not all pumps. (I didn't
know enough Portuguese to be able to ascertain if it's 100% alcohol or a
mix with gas). The price was about 1/2 that of gas, tho at $3.50 a
gallon that's no...
