I'm definitely not mechanically inclined but I do have a limited knowledge of vehicle maintenance. This one has got me stumped. My wife's '96 Blazer won't start. The vehicle cranks...........the headlights come on..........but none of the dashboard warning lights are working. This car has been...

1998 and forward Buick caliper slides by
Does anyone know exactly what Allen wrench fits the slide pins for 1998 and up Buicks? I thought it was a 45 Torx, but, alas, not so. It is a larger Allen wrench. I went to change the front struts and found the brakes condom thin. At least, I don't have to look for something to do tomorrow.

Hyundai Azera by
Have read a couple of blurbs that this new Hyundai is the 'budget Lexus', a really quality car at a bargain price. Have any of you taken a close look, or perhaps even purchased one? J.D. Power and others have claimed that Hyundai has vaulted past some of the competition in terms of quality. It...

Turbocharger for Toyota sedans by
There seem to be aftermarket turbocharger application kits for a number of cars including VW, Honda, etc. But I haven't seen any for the Camry series. Maybe I have just not looked far enough. I would seem to me that a low boost turbo application could improve the power available from one of...

SMART car engine by
Was discussing the SMART car this past week with some colleagues in Europe. It had previously been asked on this board whence the 3 cylinder diesel engine for this carlike little conveyance. The story I got, and have not yet verified, is that this engine was designed and built by Mercedes...

Those days when nothing works by
Was planning to go out of town the other day, and my battery in the 97 Dodge Custom Van was dead as hell. In my haste, I checked all the interior lights, etc, and put the charger on it overnight. The next morning, the charge indicator on the charger indicated low, but I took a reading with a...

Req: OTC 3800 Vision Lab Scope Info. Read in. by
I bought a used Vision Scope a while back which didn't have any manuals with it. I was wondering if anyone may a have an idea where a guy could get a manual or a copy of one . I've searched everywhere I can think of on the internet without any luck. Although I'm actually a motorcycle/marine...

PING Ian - Re Passkey and VATS systems by
Ian, You were a big help on that passkey information recently. The strobe from the passkey module to the ECM was, however, not well documented even in your literature. Found the following, which might be of some help at some time or the other: http://fp.enter.net/~rockcrawl/passkey.html Best...

Opinions---Jaguar by
A family member just bought a 1999 Jaguar. It is the Vanden Plaz signature, but I am not sure what else it is. Says it is a straight 6 cylinder. Has 40,000 miles and paid less than $15,000. The question is, what is he likely to encounter with this car? Old Jaguars were trouble, with frequent...

Air conditioning vs DRL by
At one point, it was suggested that disabling DRL's was a fuel saving issue, and calculations show that for a large numbers of cars and miles driven, there is a finite savings in fuel. This might be statistically and regulatorially significant when combined with other techniques which yield small...

Chrysler engines by
In order not to prolong the warranty thread, I made a broad statement the other day that Chrysler had always made good dependable engines, to my knowledge. I can't remember one that had problems with cracked blocks, premature wear, etc. The old slant six was good for a couple hundred thou,...

PING::Ian by
Ian, Can you give us some clues as to exactly how the TDM (theft deterrent module) works on GM cars? Several of us want to remove these rather troublesome devices on our project cars. In particular: (1) is the passkey recognition system the only input which trips the TDM, or are there others? (The...

Blower resistor on Dodge by
I just had the second blower voltage divider fail on my van, and thought I would post about this. This divider provides the multiple fan speeds, and is installed in the air conditioner intake plenum. When I first bought the car, the connector had burned through, and the resistor was damaged.

CV joints premature wear in 91 Integra by
Need suggestions as to why the CV joints in my 91 Integra have both worn out so quickly. Had the right side replaced in Sept'05 at 111,500 miles. Had the left side replaced in Oct'06 at 121,800 miles. Had BOTH sides replaced Yesterday at 122,800 miles. The left side was particularly noisy, and you...
