brake pipe body clamps? by George[_23_]
(04 Cavalier) I'm replacing some (rear) brake line. On their way to the back, the lines go through brackets (/clamps? retainers?) that keep the lines (and the 3 gas lines) aligned and secured to the chassis. The brackets have rounded slots on one side to receive the pipes, and a hinged snap...

What doee one call this? by micky
What do you call the material that all those signs strapped to tellephone poles and on wires stuck in the ground are made of? By people who have no respect for public property. They start off as white, two layers with parallel "ribs" of the same material between the two outer layers every...

Who does the best wheel alignments? by micky
1) After all the damage to my wheels, etc. I figure I should have the wheels aligned. A toyota. Who do you think does the best job? A Toyotal dealer, Firestone, PepBoys, or a gas station with busy service bays who was recommended? Someone I know and trust also gave a particular guy at Pep...

What is Mr. Cheater's first name? by micky
What is Mr. Cheater's first name? I wanted to read up about him, but can't find Mr. Cheater online. The inventor of the Cheater bar. There are so many things that couldn't get done without his brilliant idea.

Frequency of a key FOB? by m6onz5a
Anyone know what frequency they work at? Key fobs don't work at my house for some reason. You go two houses down and it works fine. We do have several wireless routers in our area.

How good are stretch boots? (CV, steering) by [email protected]
How good are those CV boots that can be installed without removing the axle from the vehicle because the rubber is so stretchy that even the small end of the boot can be stretched over the CV joint? The boot is installed with either a stretcher or by slipping it over a long cone that's lubed...

LR Defender in the US of A by [email protected]
what was the last year Land Rover Defender imported into the States? Aside from the competition from Jeep what where the other factors for it to sell poorly? (I see hardly any in the secondary market so I assume it was/is a rare vehicle) I don't think I ever saw a 5 or even a 3 door model while...

A missfire. by JR[_8_]
This afternoon I installed a new set of Autolite AP 65 apark plugs in my 1983 Dodge van. Since last wednesday when I was pulling a U Haul trailer with my 1948 Jeep on the trailer, my van was making a noise as though it was under a heavy load (Jeep weighs one ton) and some black smoke was coming out...

Ball joint: TRW or Moog w/o grease fitting or other brand w/ grease fitting? by [email protected]
How good are suspension and steering parts by AC Delco or Raybestos? My car was built with ball joints that have no grease fittings or holes for them, and the TRW and Moog replacements are also like that. But for the same price I can get AC Delco or Raybestos brand joints with fittings. How good...

Blacktop at 80 degrees by micky
I learned in the past couple weeks that blacktop at 80 degrees iirc is soft enough that the wheels of a floor jack, or the bottom outline of jack stands will sink into the blacktop. This is an especial problem with a floor jack because it's meant to roll backwards as the car is lifted, but if the...

Oil fouled spark plug(s) by JR[_8_]
1983 Dodge van, 318 engine. Van has almost 146,000 miles on it. Every two or three years I install new Autolite AP 64 spark plugs, I can clean the old plugs but I prefer to install new spark plugs. At least one or more cylinders fouls one or two spark plugs, I only drive that van about once a month...

2007 Ford Escape whine/vibration by [email protected]
My wife's 2007 4 cylinder automatic escape has had a slight whine/vibration almost the whole time we have had it. It only seems to do it a idle and is worst at a "sweet spot" when giving it gas. This sweet spot is just barely pressing the gas. Along with a whine I can feel it in the steering wheel....

Accelerator pump (carburetor) question by Ivan Vegvary[_2_]
Trying to revive an old leather(?) pump. In the old days the instructions told you to soak in kerosene for 10 to 15 minutes. Don't want to pay $10 for a gallon of kerosene at ACE. Only need about an ounce. Is there an alternative? Can I use transmission fluid, gasoline, oils, anything else...

bending brake line by George[_23_]
('04 Cavalier, rust belt) I have to replace some brake line, and I'm thinking of doing the whole run to the back wheels. Doing that would be a lot easier if the line could be bent _easily_. I'm looking at AGS Nicopp (definitely bendable, $$$) and Poly-Armour (not sure about bending, about half...

bleeding brakes: pressure bleed req'd? by George[_23_]
(04 Cavalier) A brake line popped while driving. So, "extreme loss of fluid", though the reservoir might not have been _totally_ empty. For this case, the AllData manual says pressure bleeding is necessary, in conjunction with a high-end scan tool. Not that anyone could know the exact...

Do brake pads have to be the same thickness? by micky
Do brake pads have to be the same thickness? AIUI, it doesn't matter. I'm having real trouble getting the inner brake pad to fit all the way into the appropriate space. It won't go in the last 3/8". I'll use a brighter flashlight and try harder to see what is interfering with the thick...

How to remove and replace a snap ring in a FWD car by micky
How to remove and replace a snap ring in a FWD car. I hit a curb with my car and broke in half the right half-axle, broke a big chunk out of the RF rim and a piece the size of a tea-cup saucer from the tire too, cracked my lower suspension arm, and severed the right ball joint (2000 Toyota Solara,...
