Overflow noise...Newbie question

Marc,

Do you run with any type of sponge filters through your system? Is the
protein skimmer and biological filteration the only things you are using?

I have a converted wet/dry, but kept the sponge and a cotton filter that I
try and change regularly (but sometimes forget :( ). My nitrates do go up,
and I've removed both of these in hopes that this is actually the cause

....

Thanks!

You do not really need spong filter. Skimmer will take care of those
nutrient or small particle that flow around. Other heavier particle will
sink and will be taken care by your janitoral critter. Sponge and any other
filter or floss will increase your nitrate from trapped particle. This
in-turn will cause your PS to do extra duty until those trapped particle
decay or manually removed. Decay particle will introduce bacteria to consume
and will cause small cycle of your tank.

Only filter in reef a
LS
LR
Janitoral critter [shrimp / star / crab / worm / snail / grazing critter
like tank / and algae (yes algae)]

No mechanical filter exception of PS.
