[Rainbows]

around here out creeks are full of them.
and blue eyes and damned gambusia!
Rainbows are good long lived fish and they loves their bloodworms

Rainbows are cool, but most are expensive in the US. But their cost and
novelty puts many customers off, so the fish have time to recuperate at the
fish shop. I think that Celebes Rainbows with their little angel wing
pectoral fins are some of the most attractive fish around.

As for Gambusia, in these parts they're the backbone of the local ecosystem.
I am sorry they have caused so much damage elsewhere.

Thanks for all your suggestions so far. I was actually leaning more
towards a community tank. What would you guys sugguest for that?

Pretty much anything that sorts your local water conditions...In
addition to the rainbows and Malawis I keep (not all in the same tank I
hasten to add):-

Gouramis - Opaline, Pearl and Dwarf
Loaches - Clown and Yoyo
Harlequin Rasboras
Tetras - Glowlight, Neon and Rummy Nose (the Neons don't do too well)
Cories - Panda and Julli
Flying Foxes (false SAEs)
Otos
Mollies
Platys
Betta
Fancy Guppies (male)

There are plenty more that could be kept - so many fish...so few tanks....

Around how many Corys would I have to get for them to be happy? They
school a little right? Would I be able to get both panda and julli to
school together or just one kind?

I have 4 julli in one tank and 6 Pandas in another....I seem to remember
reading somewhere that 5 plus was a good number but can't find it
again...certainly I have not seen much difference in behaviour between
keeping 4 or 6...the 6 might occassionally go off together in small
groups of two or three but that is the only difference that I have
noticed...

As for whether they would school together - I don't know as I haven't
tried it....I do know people who keep different varieties together with
no issues....I will probably be putting my cories altogether in one big
tank over the coming days - I'll let you know how it goes....

The shape and size of your tank calls for small to medium fish - IMHO
- I hate looking at a tall hex tank with just a couple of big fish in
it. My dog's vet has a hex in her waiting room, and she has only two
large kissing gouramis in it. Technically, they probably have enough
water, but they look darned uncomfortable in that tank. I'm glad she
knows more about dogs than she does fish. It has taken her years to
get the hex tank running and filtering properly. Mostly with advice
from a few of the humans that accompany her patients.

5. Bare minimum. Corys are quite good neighbors to those of their own
kind, (The amerikan way, eh?), and usually school with any and all
corys they find in their neighborhood - pandas, albinos, julli,
everyone takes part in the block party. In one of my tank there is a
great size difference between some of the corys, common green corys
and an albino that never made it to the albino tank, from a half inch
long to burly 3 inchers. They all school together.

I chose 5 because I have a superstition that everything in nature
looks better in odd numbers, not even. You may employ this line of
thinking in your gardening, 9 tulips look better than 8 or 10.

My lfs got his shipment of Espe's rasboras last week, and he has some
earmarked for me. I currently have 3 and I want 7 or 9. They are only
available to my lfs during this time of the year, so this shipment
will be his last until next spring. The answer is obvious, I need to
purchase either 4 or 6, so I'll have an odd number. But what if one
dies? Should I buy an extra just in case? But there is no reason to
believe one might die, they have been doing very well in the dealer's
tank as well as in my own tank. I haven't picked them up yet because I
can't decide how many to buy. I'm glad he is closed today. I can put
off the decision until tomorrow.

thanks for your advice re Cories. I know I am definatly getting some
Thinking maybe 6 either all julli or maybe 4 or 2 pandas. We will see.

Medium fish - what about a single blue Acara. I know they do get
aggressive and stuff when they breed but they are they ok to be kept w/
small community fish if there is only one present and no chance of
breeding?? Or is a blue acara too big for my tank anyway?

Other fish I was considering - a small of 6-8 school of white clouds,
*maybe* one mean gourami from my friends tank he is mean but so pretty!!
