Have you done the windows Uninstall Programs procedure? Systems
Works will give you the option of repairing rather than uninstalling. Try that. Dave On Sun, 21 Sep 2003 18:59:00 GMT, "Nedra" wrote: Opps ... using Windows 98. Nedra "iogahC" wrote in message ... I believe you have me filtered out but I'll try anyway... What do you mean
"fried"? Have you had it installed and working and you then uninstalled and are now trying to install it again? What are your error messages if you are getting any? I have tried every option availablein SystemWorks.
And yes, I did the Uninstall Program. I also installed Ghost..thought that would give me access to the AV program. No such luck. I also get two error messages on startup: "Memory access vilation in module kernel32 2746:65135331" and another with the last 12 digits reading: 9272:93628369 Nedra "Dave Fouchey" wrote in message ... Nedra if you had the virus it stops firewalls and antivirus progs. from working :( either you or someone else needs to save important files somehow then most likely do a format/wipe and reload everything everyone should do a "regedit" registry/ registry export weekly save as date.reg and then all you have to do is click that and you can restore from before an attack and be back to normal in 3-5 mins.. -- http://www.kencofish.com Ken Arnold, 401-781-9642 cell 401-225-0556 Importer/Exporter of Goldfish,Koi,rare Predators Shipping to legal states/countries only! Wow, I'm surprised you can run XP on a machine with just 4 Gig.... Actually, from last November until this past Thursday, things were going fine! (And I really like being able to deal with digital photos in WinXP without having to open separate "photo" program). I really recommend that you get a new hard drive even if it is just 20Gig (watch for them on sale - they are about $1/Gig). Yup! I'm getting that done Tuesday! 30 gig coming my way (the technician is bringing it!) That or go back to a smaller OS. You will never function properly with what you are doing and you will be having serious virus problems now or down the line if you cannot apply the patches. And I wish MS would have notified me that my "automatic update" wasn't being successful, sigh...... If you can get a USB jumpdrive, (expensive right now but so very cute and useful) then you can put your personal data on it and transfer it to your new harddrive once you are up and running. Is that one of those cute little keychain thingy's? I've been wondering how they worked. (I'm not sure whether I have a second USB port; the SanDisk reader for the digital camera flash cards is using one port -- I suppose I could always *look* at the computer to figure it out! Since I'm going to have to make space for the tech to install the new hard drive.) You can also keep your current drive as a backup drive (I'm talking outloud here... not trying to direct or be bossy). That was suggested as an option, but I don't know if there is room in my computer for 2 internal hard drives, and I already have way too much hardware on my desk as it is. It really is critical that you do the patches with Windows. Oh, yeah, that I know -- I just wasn't prepared for the concept of *not* having the capacity to do that! The msblaster virus infects a machine that is simply connected to the internet. It does not come through your email and it does not have to be opened. Believe me, a bunch of us RoadRunner users were discussing that when Blaster appeared! Anne Lurie Raleigh, NC |

Nedra,
Dave had a good point, BTW -- although you mentioned using an Install feature, it might have been Norton's -- as in, you put the CD in, the install program starts automatically ............*except* that Win98 is a wee bit picky about such things, sigh.... Before doing anything else, you might try going to Win98 Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and let Win98 install the program. (You say, "Mother, may I install Norton Anti-virus" and Win98 says "Yes, put the CD in now, dear, and I'll install it, since you were polite & asked permission.") If that does not work, you might try the Automated Support Assistant at Symantec's website http://symantec.com/techsupp/activedata/asa_index.jsp. Also, it's generally a good idea to close any other programs (including screensavers) before trying to install any software. Anne Lurie Raleigh, NC "Nedra" wrote in message .net... Gale, I tried setting Norton Anti-virus to just delete emails from those on the "blocked senders list" that I had just created, but I got a popup screen each time NAV did it, yuck! Try going through the options at NAV until you come to "delete messages silently" or something like that. Well, at least this email barrage has accomplished something -- I'm finally going to get a bigger hard drive installed, so I can download the *real* security fix from Microsoft's website; I've tried several times, but I don't have enough space on my hard drive (probably because I was foolish enough to install Windows XP on an "older" computer).
