Direct attack on K30P ;)
It had to happen.... after having 5 cats, 40 odd fish, 3 turtles... jealousy
got the better of me, and we went to the dogs. Our newest watergarden addition can be seen he http://www.wide-o.net/patsy%5Fmarch/ She (12 weeks old), named Patsy (one of our cats was already called Edina) fell into the turtle pond after only 6 days LOL. Hi again to the regulars BTW. My pond is doing very well, pond has never been so clean both mechanically and biologically, and yet I've never seen string algae this long (over 4 ft :eek:), but the fish are thriving and growing like mad (pond was heated all winter, now 14°C). The dog so far is only interested in the pellets that I drop when feeding the fish. just precious, but I still favor the inscrutability of the cat! Your pond sounds wonderful ... You were able to enjoy it for a longer period of time this past winter. Mine is open ... I'm still a "cat person" myself I think, but it blurs very much with Patsy around. They are very different animals, have different needs, and frankly, are good for our health. (going out, playing etc...) It's also fascinating to see the cats interface with the dogs... we only had her for 2 weeks now, and the cats mostly ignore her these days. Although I did see her chasing a fly together with our youngest cat :D The first 3 days it seemed we had no cats left (they were very mad at us), and we panicked a bit, but since then, it goes better every day, and the cats very much demonstrate a "OK, you got this smelly stupid thing, but this is our house and we will not give in" attitude. We specifically wanted a lab because they are almost always non agressive dogs, very much into playing and pleasing the "bosses". She has not let us down in that respect at all. She never barks, and only chases the cats when they run away from her (but that is normal). Glad your pond is waking up as well, it's a special time of year for most ponders I think. She looks exactly like my Patty (r.i.p.), a virtual chocolate lab, actually spca mix of lab and Brittany Spaniel. My Patty was the best, sweetest, smartest, dog in the whole world. I couldn't have a pond then because she was an expert diver and swimmer and would have been as much one of the fish as she was one of the humans. rtk |

sorry, I agree. Labs do not deserve all the faith people put in them. they need
TRAINING. get good training and she will be much more malleable and obedient. labs are known for going after smaller animals and doing damage if not killing them. I think you are confusing lab with Golden (who have their own bag of problems). I didnt know that either, but then I have a Papillon and am on a Pap list and people
there have had more problems with charging labs than other dogs. We have always had ESS (springers) and our current 1 yo snot Harry Potter charges at everything, the doors, the walls, the chairs. I have seen him put one of his big feet on Foxy our Pom and push her around the floor like a dust mop. HP has already caused damage to Sims my Pap resulting in 8 stitches to his scalp. It isnt like HP doesnt know indoor from outdoor, for example he doesnt hurt the bunnies when DH lets em out but then he is keeping a close eye on HP. Outside I wouldnt be surprised if his contact with bunnies would be terminal .. deliberate or not. I'm sure that any dog within any breed can have aggression problems due to any number of factors. We never let our dogs make 'friends' with strange dogs at the park or strange toddlers for that matter ;-) and we've had people with their dogs and children try and chase us down so they can play with our dogs. Just not going to take that chance. We always leave the sidewalk and walk away from them and that still doesn't stop them! I'm sure that any dog within any breed can have aggression problems due to any number of factors. We never let our dogs make 'friends' with strange dogs at the park or strange toddlers for that matter ;-) and we've had people with their dogs and children try and chase us down so they can play with our dogs. In the end, Edina did not have kittens, probably due to a spontaneous "abortion" (we never noticed, that's what the vet told us). Funnily enough, she is now very much pregnant again, we'll see what happens. Cats & dog are often in the same room these days, and it goes quite well. LOL @ the God thing, it rings very true to me :-) Patsy has avoided the pond apart for drinking (well, very loud slobbering, the cats look in disgust when she drinks, eats or farts :D), that's a good thing I hope. In the end, Edina did not have kittens, probably due to a spontaneous "abortion" (we never noticed, that's what the vet told us). The dog so far is only interested in the pellets that I drop when feeding the fish. I think as with any dog, one has to realize that behind the cute puppy look
slumbers a potentially dangerous animal. So you do have to work with them, a lot, and keep them in check. But first of all, we want her to trust us completely, and try to educate her through reward, not punishment. That's sometimes hard when she craps on the carpet after just having had a long walk (yek ! :-) but in the end will be worth while IMHO. Theo "Ka30P" schreef in bericht ... Ingrid wrote labs are known for going after smaller animals and doing damage if not killing them. I have never heard that. And never seen it in the three generations of labs my family has had in Jody, Maggie, Rosie, Heidi and Cody. The girls are highly suspicious of kitty scent on our hands! Pondwise I'm ready to adopt my first batch of frogs' eggs from jan today. She might emerge from 'exploring' covered in the stuff! Heidi, the yellow lab, has come in the house stained green with grass or spotted with pink spots from fallen cherries. I remember seeing my friends lab going nuts over the bunnies in the back yard
when he was let out. My friend was always trying to relocate the bunnies for their own safety. He was well trained and behaved, but he wanted those bunnies. My cockerspaniel....who is not well trained and has been a mental case since she was born....despite constant consistant handling, is also a bunny, squirrel, bird hunter.....oh and boy did she love to roll in the pond "stuff" we cleaned out of the pond the other day.......
