Newbie - How many fish?
My daughter got a 5 gallon tank kit for the holidays. We have an
African Dwarf Frog and a small tetra in the tank. We'd like to get another frog and perhaps 1-2 more fish. How many fish can safely live in a 5 gallon tank? Would a ctfish be a good idea (to help keep the tank clean)? Thanks in advance for you help! |

You could probably keep about 8 2-3 inch fish and maybe 12 1 inch fish, but I definately wouldn't overload it. I would get a couple of guppies. Also the frog isn't one of those big white frogs is he? If so he'll eat your fish. -- reefman MC ------------------------------------------------------------------------ reefman MC's Profile: http://www.reef-chat.com/forum/membe...tinfo&userid=7 View this thread: http://www.reef-chat.com/forum/showt...?threadid=7219 |

Oh and the catfish. Wait a couple of weeks and let the tank get built up with algae, and get one corydoras and an otocinclus. Corydoras catfish for the waste and the otocinclus for the algae. -- reefman MC ------------------------------------------------------------------------ reefman MC's Profile: http://www.reef-chat.com/forum/membe...tinfo&userid=7 View this thread: http://www.reef-chat.com/forum/showt...?threadid=7219 |

I second that.

Yeah, in all the advice I've ever gotten, they said 1 inch or less per gallon.

that's a good rule for freshwater fish, but not marine.

well Cap if you had read his/her post that I replied to, it was 1" or LESS
per gallon as a rule. I think regardless of the species that would hold true. kc "CapFusion" wrote in message ... Thanks to all for the replies. I added a Panda Cory and will probably
add 1 more frog and perhaps a second tetra - that will leave us with 5 total animals under 1" - now if I can only convince my wife to let me upgrade to a 30-50 gallon tank........ om... Yeah, in all the advice I've ever gotten, they said 1 inch or less per gallon. Those rules do not apply in "pretend" tanks. You need to get a Betta if you want long lasting long term fish. Also, you don't ever add algae eating fish to a new tank because......there's no algae! Let is know when all those fish you bought die, I give them 1 month max. |
Newbie - How many fish?
Wow - thanks for the encouraging note. I've had the "pretend" tank
now for about a month and the fish are doing fine. I'm going to stick to my current 3 until I purchase a larger tank. "BiG_Orange" @ wrote in message ... "Fish Rule" wrote in message om... I'm not an internet troll, I know what I am talking about. Your fish will not live long term which is a great injustice to the animals. When your fish die, will you be honest enough to come back and verify so other reading the archives in the future don't needlessly kill off fish in glorified bowls? B.O. |

It's been a month. The fish are doing fine. The biological filter
has kicked in and all of the water readings are in the appropriate ranges. B.O. I'll keep you posted as my fish live long healthy lives. Thanks. "BiG_Orange" @ wrote in message ... I bet you would have been discouraged when you were
just starting out and had asked someone like yourself for advice.
