Foreground plant
 

I would like to hear what different people in this group use for a foreground plant. I'm familiar/heard of most of the ones out there, but have only tried a few. I'm looking for something to use as a low growing, but hardy, foreground plant in my 75 gal. tank. This is a high tech CO2 injected high light tank.

Cryptocoryne wendtii ''green'' is suitable for small aquariums. When
grown in an open space the leaves will virtually lie on the bottom.
Like most other Sri Lanka Cryptocorynes, it also grows well in hard
water. Like many other plants, it can be affected by cryptocoryne
disease. One way to prevent this is by only leaving the 4-5 newest
leaves on the plant when planting. It is a good foreground plant, even

I would recommend Glossostigma elatinoides...

Glossostigma elatinoides is much in demand in Japanese-inspired
aquariums. It is one of the smallest aquarium plants, and thus a good
foreground plant. A difficult plant demanding a lot of light. Grows
upwards if light is poor. Make sure larger plants do not overshadow it.
When planting in the aquarium small clumps (approx. 1/8 pot) should be
placed at intervals of a few centimetres to help the plants grow
together more quickly. CO2 addition and soft water promote growth
significantly.

Several come to mind: Echinodorus Tenellus (nice and easy to keep),
Lilaeopsis Brasiliensis (makes a nice lawn, but can become a real
pest, because it goes everywhere), Glossostigma Elatinoides
(nice, and easy to control, needs a lot of light), Cryptocorine Parva
(smallest known Crypt species, grows to about an inch, but *very*
slowly). Larger foreground plants (to about 4 inches) would be the
smaller crypts, such as Unulata, Walkeri, etc.) These are easy to
grow, easy to keep under control, and look nice. Some of the
smaller sagitarria would be suitable too, I suspect (but I have no
personal experience with those). I'd avoid hair grass (Eleocharis
Acicularis). It looks great, but also tends to go everywhere and
makes an awful mess when it comes time to trim it down (which
is often, in a high-light tank with CO2).

I'll be taking pics of my tank shortly and can show you in about a week or
so. I'm not sure of the exact name as the LFS i bought them from are slack!
It looks just like a Big Wendtii except it only gets about 10cm tall, leaves
stay close to the ground, leaf colours vary depending on nutrient dosing,
from brown with green stripes (and vice versa!) to gold bronze shiny. And
hardy to boot. An exceptional plant, HIGHLY recommended. Go and getit :)

if i had a half decent LFS around me... one that MIGHT carry something other
than banana plants...

And on the other hand for a while I couldn't find bananas anywhere I
tried! LFS only had cabomba/anacharis, mail order suppliers out of stock
for ages. I never knew banana plants were so common in your part of the
world.
