Total Newbie questions..

Some friends are moving away, and have offered me their tank, never done
an aquarium before, sounds like something I could handle (no pets at the
mo). Was looking for some sites that have real newbie info on there,
the real basics... Any good places to shop for stuff, in the UK??

Cheers.
I'm hoping to not turn into a fish serial killer :-)

Tank should be dropped round (hopefully not literally) tomorrows, seem
to remember when I saw it last, it was a reasonable size, bit will post
the CC when I get it..

Thanks for the links, and I'll have a scan on ebay/amazon for that book.

Cheers.

Well I got the tank, and loads of other stuff to sift through, the tank
is 14.5 Gallon (or for those us that use a proper measurement system,
54Litres). I know it depends on the fish, but typically how many fish
should I be looking at putting in there?

Assuming it's freshwater, which I previously neglected to find out,
there is a rule of thumb that states "one inch of tropical fish per
gallon". (yes, I'm in the US, and we have a lousy measurement system,
so roughly 6mm of fish per litre) Keep in mind the adult size of the
fish before purchase. This rule has many exceptions. Some fish are
too territorial to share their space with other fish, for example.

Just spotted the same question asked in the thread above, which prompts
the next obvious question, does this NG have a FAQ?

Indeed it does, and a damn good one at that.

Don't let it keep you from asking questions, though. Also, this group
is pretty slow, add rec.aquaria.freshwater.misc to your list.

A school of 10 black neons and a troup of three otocinclus catfish.
Throw in a betta, a Pomacea bridgesii, java fern and anubias and
you should be good to go.
