What Are the Odds?!?
 

I got in to work this morning and found that overnight, one of my tanks
bottom glass "gave out".

I didnt realise what had happened right away...

I had assumed that the bottom seal gave out so naturally I took everything
out and was going to re-seal the tank.

I was amazed when I got to the bottom and saw the tempered glass was
shattered!

Has this happened to anyone else before?

glass went !!!

OMG is right -- how big was the tank? (tanks) -- is there a certain brand
name that this is happening to? Is there any explanation? I am a little
worried - I have a 2 story house and a 125 and a 20 upstairs. Would be
disastrous if this happened here. What ARE the odds??

Both of my tanks are on a solid surface.... well reasonably solid. The surface
is 3/4" wood on a sturdy stand, and the tank sits on this. However both tanks
have the plastic trim around the base, so I gues the glass isn't *truly*
supported on every square inch.

Marc, trying not to dwell on this too much!

I checked with my house insurer that I would be covered if my 150
gallon reef tank busted, and made my house a tide pool.

I wouldn't worry to much

The first tank that went was a secondhand one I had bought from a LFS

The second one was one I had been given by an uncle and had been sitting
unused for years

The one the front went on was after my brother got drunk and fell into it
one christmas !!!

Call your insurer and ask how much it would cost to add special
coverage. This will be a good indicator of the odds. Also, they might
actually (actuarially?) have data on this.

I wouldn't file a claim even if it did go. The lady who teaches my
daughter's horseback riding, her mom works for the insurance industry. She
said these days.. unless your house burns to the ground, don't file a claim.
Most companies will cancel you if you make a claim these days and some even
consider just ASKING about it as potential trouble. Even a minor one will
get your rates *adjusted*. Most things you are better off just sucking up
without even a glance towards your insurance company's phone number..

One thing to check... When you move the tank remains off of the base,
take a level or straightedge and check te surface of the table or
stand where you had it. Is is PERFECTLY level?? No raised spots??
That can cause stress points...

Tempered glass is weird. When I bought our house, it had a crappy
homemade sunroom attached, with the roof panels made out of 3X6 foot
sheets of tempered glass. I removed the whole thing. I carried the
glass panels around to the front yard, to load them into the truck
heading for the dump. I was carrying one over my head, walking
slowly, and the thing just decided to explode! I'm still finding
glass bits 7 years later in the garden. Then, when I got to the dump
(transfer station), I picked up one of the sheets, and threw it out
into the collection bin - a 15 foot plus drop. The thing hit the
bottom on edge and... nothing. No breaks, no explosions, no cracks...

The brand of aquarium was Perfecto. It is, er, was a 75 gal and it was
mfg'd in Aug of '95.

Originally, I confused the "anchor" logo for All-Glass. I called All-Glass
up and explained what happened. They said even though it was out of
warranty they would replace it for me under the inexplicable
circumstances... I thought that was great! Then I realised the anchor
meant is was Perfecto and I just couldnt go through with accepting a tank
from All-Glass... So I called up Perfecto and explained everything but they
denied me a new tank because it was out of warranty. Oh well....

Unfortunately, this happened in the middle of the night and by the time it
ws discovered, the livestock was long gone. It was one of my tanks that I
keep at work. It is a VERY solid stand that is on a concrete slab.

The plastic trim seems a bit warpped in the middle front. I dont know it
that happened before or after it broke. I never noticed it before...

Did you tell the folks at Perfecto that All-Glass offered to replace 'their'
tank?
I would be more inclined to buy All-Glass before a Perfecto based on this
info.
Of course I prefer Oceanic - I have two 110g that have been moved, stored
and setup many times over the last 12 years I've owned them...

No Greg, I did not mention that. It felt too "cheesy".
I also thought the same thing about buying all-glass in the future.
However, they only offer a 1 year warranty now whereas perfecto is 20. =\

I cant really blame perfecto. It's been 8 years and the tank only came w/
5.
