question about snakes
What is your experience with garter and bull snakes. I presume that both eat koi, but I also assume that there is some point at where a koi is too big for a garter snake to kill. What about Bull snakes? Are they a threat to big koi? doug |

Ok, that is good information. Did nets on the pond help with snakes? I am assuming I am going to have to net the pond to stop herons, so if that will help with snakes as well, that is good. doug Reel Mckoi ) wrote: : "Doug Quarnstrom" wrote in message : ... : : What is your experience with garter and bull snakes. "Doug Quarnstrom" wrote in message ... Ok, that is good information. Did nets on the pond help with snakes? ## YES! It keeps them out except for the teeny tiny ones too small to eat anything but a baby fish. In fact the snakes sometimes snag and kill themselves in the net. Before the nets keeping fish was becoming impossible and very expensive. I am assuming I am going to have to net the pond to stop herons, so if that will help with snakes as well, that is good. ## The net will keep out not only herons but Kingfishers, snapper turtles and bullfrogs - all fish eaters. Just make sure you check the net for holes regularly. -- McKoi.... the frugal ponder... EVERYONE: "Please check people's headers for forgeries before flushing." NAMES ARE BEING FORGED. I suspect you are correct. ## Then Roy needs to tell that to the snakes where I live. :-) So far we've had to remove one live (had to kill it first) and several dead snakes from the net. They'd get their heads through but their bodies, being thicker, were snagged. They would then try to escape by going in a circle, or so it appeared.... and be so tangled they were impossible to remove (alive.) Maybe he used a net with larger spacing. We never lost another koi to snakes nor ever saw another snake in the ponds after netting them. With the number of water snakes were I live if the nets didn't work I wouldn't have one fish left. I used to catch and keep snakes. My first attempts involved making a simple box, getting some screen, and stapling the screen to the inside of the box hole. The snakes always escaped, until I learned to completely pin all edges of the screen with a wood perimeter on both sides. C// -- McKoi.... the frugal ponder... Really Carol, it seems that every critter is always flocking to your ponds, unconventional items work only for you but not others, things that work for others never apply or work for you.....you have to go into a diatribe listing critters in your area, and are waiting in line just to jump in your pond........ most folks know what is out there, and your suroundings are certainly no different that other places are.....get a clue........netting is not an effective way to control snakes........if what you say is the case, then wasting animals that pose a threat like snakes your net and you kill, and that never ending horde of snapping turtles waiting to take up residence as soon as the former inhabitant is removed, is just like your propensity to waste water. ...On Fri, 24 Jun 2005 00:53:42 -0500, "Reel Mckoi" wrote: === ==="Courageous" wrote in message ===news:n9qpb1l4d1pn04k7mma62i6a1cgpqik92o@4ax. com... === === A snake can squeeze thro9ugh some darn small openings, and I find it === hard to belicve netting alone is going to restrict a snake fropm === getting in a typical pond.......contrary to what McKoi === says.......... === === I suspect you are correct. === ===## Then Roy needs to tell that to the snakes where I live. :-) So far ===we've had to remove one live (had to kill it first) and several dead snakes ===from the net. You really need to tell this to someone who gives a darn.......I sure don't.......I live 20+ miles in the boondocks, nearest neighbor approx 10 miles away, surounded by swamps on three sides and heavy forest on the other...all within about 2 miles from a major river and wetland and .have more critters to deal with than you, and even with the occasional 2 or 3 gators a year that try and take up residence in the swamps and my pond...........herons out the ying yang, snappers, sliders, soft shells, all kinds of snakes, racoons that turn my trash cans over nightly, opppossums taking up residence in my outbuildings, feral dogs, coyotes, fox, and now and then a wandering bear or two and yet I manage to keep a large natural pond free of predators and problems without a net or making such a fuss about how bad they are, like you have a damned monopoly on critter problems....................Perhaps you need to move back to new york city since you seem so set on barricading yourself against whats natural in the area you moved into..... ..On Fri, 24 Jun 2005 09:58:23 -0500, "Reel Mckoi" scrawled: === ==="~Roy~" wrote in message ... === === === Really Carol, it seems that every critter is always flocking to your === ponds, === ===## Really Roy, I live out in the country, 6 miles from the nearest town and ===barely a mile from a huge lake surrounded by woodland. === ===unconventional items work only for you but not others, === ===## Which unconventional items? "~Roy~" wrote in message ... You really need to tell this to someone who gives a darn.......I sure don't....... ## Tell what to someone who cares? That makes no sense. I you didn't CARE you wouldn't be reading all my messages to see what you can contradict. I live 20+ miles in the boondocks, nearest neighbor approx 10 miles away, surounded by swamps on three sides and heavy forest on the other.. ## And next you'll claim you never have fish eating wildlife in your natural pond. And since you once lived where I do you KNOW what invades ponds HERE - right? After all you know every section of the USA and what lives there..... ..all within about 2 miles from a major river and wetland and .have more critters to deal with than you, and even with the occasional 2 or 3 gators a year that try and take up residence in the swamps and my pond...........herons out the ying yang, snappers, sliders, soft shells, all kinds of snakes, racoons that turn my trash cans over nightly, opppossums taking up residence in my outbuildings, feral dogs, coyotes, fox, and now and then a wandering bear or two and yet I manage to keep a large natural pond free of predators ## Please... ....... next you'll claim you do it with a magic wand! You swirl you wand and the Kingfishers leave,... the snappers and bullfrogs run away.... and problems without a net or making such a fuss about how bad they are, like you have a damned monopoly on critter problems. ## And just why do you CARE so much about the predators myself and my neighbors here have? ....................Perhaps you need to move back to new york city since you seem so set on barricading yourself against whats natural in the area you moved into..... ## Perhaps you need to tell the truth - that you are clueless as to what fish eating predators we have where I live and concern yourself with your own pond. You seem awfully upset that some areas of the south make pond keeping problematic if you want to keep fish. Now maybe you should move to a big city and learn how to get along with others..... :-) If you don't like nets and all your fish predators don't eat fish anymore or moved away because of your magic wand - then don't use nets. It's as simple as that! If you think you're going to drive me off this NG with your constant childish posts contradicting everything I post you're wasting your time. -- McKoi.... the frugal ponder...
