Tynk went the J.G. Shedd Aquarium = )

Hi all!
Well I went on my annual visit to the Shedd aquarium.
(It's the world's largest public aquarium in Chicago, IL, USA for those
not in the US).

NetMax!
I was looking at our favorite Cardinal Tetra display. There I was
squating down near the glass just like a kid...then drip. I was like
huh..looked up....again..drip, drip...I was like Uh Oh = 0
There was dripping water coming from in between the wall of glass and
the wall trim at the top.
I don't have a clue as to where the source was, but I did tell
somebody. She looked at it...and had this face like OH CRAP and left to
get somebody.
It's most likely a leaky pipe or roof because the water level of that
tank wasn't near the leak, but who knows what's about the display where
we can't see. = O
I took some pics of the display (not the leak, lol) and of course had
to get a shot of the Giant Gourami that rams the tank wall at you if
you eyeball it.
It didn't ram the glass time at me. I changed how I looked at it.
When he/she eye balled me...I turned my head slightly and averted my
gaze....a simply non threatening body gesture to most living creatures.
This was the first time it didn't ram the tank.
Hmm...I might be onto to something. = )

I put photos on my site of my visit there. I wish I could talk to someone
about what they used to landscape their interiors. Did you know that there
is a bigger aquarium planning/built in ... Georgia I think. So the Shedd
will still be the biggest public aquarium in Illinois ;~).

Have you checked out the photos I posted from David's visit to Thailand?
They are on my site (see earlier thread). I was thinking of you & Christine
when I put them up. I think you'll be amused.

I thought Shedd hadn't been the world's largest for, like, decades..?
Boston has a much larger central tank, and Monterey has more raw gallons.

Oh yeah, I remember when you posted those NetMax because we discussed
how my former company did the $150 Million renovation for Shedd.
(refresher: I am an exhibit designer who started out in public
aquariums)

Depending on the type of landscape they are trying to reproduce they
will often use a resin casted from molds and/or blow shotcrete and
shape it by hand. Obviously, the former works better on detailed
landscape. Some institutions will mix live material (plants, corals,
etc) into their exhibits. Monterey Bay for example pumps water in from
outside and grows all their own giant kelp. New England Aquarium's
central tank is entirely fabricated and hand painted.

The website is completely underwhelming. I can see nothing special here.
They should take a lesson from Monterey Bay.

Hi there Mr. G.

They're open. World's biggest.

Thanks all for correcting me. = )

Side note for Mr. G....on the Angefish thread I posted a reply...2
different times and it went poof twice!!
I'll try and do it again for a 3rd time later on. Just too much to type
again right now.
Hey...can I email you directly so I don't have to chance it again. I
don't know what's going on today with this site, or the web, or if it's
aol...I don't know. I do know I hit send for the second one I wrote
with an important side note about your baby girl (your Newfie), and
then it told me I had to sign in..I did and then it supplied me with a
blank reply window and my post hasn't yet showed up. So I think it's
lost again.
The first time I was trying to copy and paste a link for 2 Angelfish
suppliers online and then it went poof too.
So let me know if I can just re-write everything and send it via email.
That way I know it won't mess up.

Thunderbird is free. Free Agent is free, but limits your email to
sending out, ie replying to sender by email, of course you can reply
directly to the mailing list, which is all many people do, it won't
let you receive email, it won't let you killfile, and it won't let you
transfer and move messages to different folders. And it won't let you
do a whole lot of things I can't imagine ever wanting to do, but it's
nice to know I can if I give them $29.

If your business takes you to their convention centre (McCormick Centre),
then the aquarium is almost in walking distance. Taxi & about 2 hours of

newsserver like I do? Some of them you don't even have to log onto
like
aioe.cjb.net.

OE sucks beyond belief. Get Free Agent or Thunderbird.

-- Mister Gardener

I use Thunderbird for newsgroup reading/posting - pretty sure I can
block stuff - just can't be bothered...

Yeah - the trouble with kill filing is you'll never know if you missed
something interesting. Or good, even.

did i just miss something? ;-)

OE is designed for e-mail, not usenet. agent and t-bird are designed for
usenet,... except for those of us who cant be bothered. :-P~

OE is both a mail/news reader, as long as you have email/news you can set it
up to use it.

... ironic... no simple answer for Mac. it's all about simple answers.

I use MT-Newswatcher. There are many variants of the newswatcher
application, all of them free. It works great.

Then, unless your ISP already provides a newsfeed, you will need to set
yourself up with a free news server.

Thanks Diorite.
I gave it another try and found a mac supported client... Thunderbird.
I'm officially responding using my first ever newsreader! :D I have to
learn how to use the proper etiquette so be gentle on me everyone while
I learn my way around.

It's like joining the real world all of a sudden. Of course, I'm still
going to have to use Google while I'm at work.

nikki and mr gardener,
yes OE can do usenet, but it was not designed for usenet. it was
designed as as a simplified e-mail client without all the extra's of MS
outlook and targeted (as most MS software is) to the general layman of a
mass market that recieved it for free with their OS (i would hope there is a
realization that MS software and OS are not the best, just the most
available and used; think McDonalds). as a news reader it is _severely_
limited. naturally other clients designed with more consideration for
usenet can handle e-mail, for what it's worth IE can do e-mail/usenet and it
was designed as a web browser. when making comparisons dont compare apples
to oranges; OE is no more aplicable for usenet anymore than MSCHAT was for
IRC. and FWIW, i use OE.

Take a closer look. OE is an email program as well as a newsreader.
T-bird and (Full) Agent are email programs that are also newsreaders.
Free Agent is primarily a newsreader, without full email.

I don't think anyone has attempted to compare quality of Usenet

And whether OE was designed to be a newsreader or not, it is the
newsreader of choice for many people. I've never used OE for anything,
so I can't comment on its strengths or weaknesses, I just know that a
lot of folks use it. Agent serves my newsreader needs very nicely, and
MS Outlook is my emailer of choice. Once again, I'm not attempting to
compare any of these programs beyond the features each claims to
offer.

apologies. i think i may have come off the wrong way. i was not advocating
a campaign against MS OE or other MS software, but simply wished to point
out there are vast differences in applications (which most of you already
know) and in specific: applications that software are designed to client and
what is thrown in as a matter of convenience are two different things. i'm
one of the first to admit i use OE, (it fits my needs) but that doesnt mean
it is better or even adiquate for those with specific needs wrt usenet
applications. in reality OE isnt even the best e-mail client... (not to
