Hi all,

I buildt a cave from ceramic slates for my catfish, gluing the pieces
together with silicon. I used casco transparent glass silicon, it has the
number 2985 on it. It says on the tube it's meant for aquariums.

However, I'm a bit concerned becuase now after 24 hours I can still smell
the silicon, a rather unpleasant odour. I'm reluctant to put my piece of art
into the fishtank becuase of this smell :P Have I used a potentially
dangerous silicon? should I wait longer than the 24 hours it says on the
package?

Nina

Just give it an extra 24 hours... really depends on how thick you
applied the silicone. If you can smell it, then it has not finished
curing yet and should not be placed into your tank as it _may_ poison
the fish.

It'll be ok, you wont' smell it when it's underwater.. hahaha... jk...

but seriously, leaving it out for 24-48hrs to 'cure' is recommended. After
that, you can rinse it off and throw it on in the aquarium and it'll be
fine. realize that thicker portions of the silicone may take longer to
cure... but the smell will be there for months if you wanted to wait for it
to leave... it's ok to put in the tank after it's cured.

When I've used silicon for aquarium projects, I've generally had to
wait several days for the smell to fade. Heck, the new ten gallon tank
I bought this weekend smells very strongly yet. Fresh off the assembly
line, I guess.

Give it some more time, it will clear up.

Hmm, I don't know if I would throw it in right away. I've never smelled the
silicone in aquariums, so the smell does go away pretty quickly (unless all
the aquariums that are sold are put in storage for months until the smell
goes away). I'd give it a couple more days to cure, especially if you used
thick patches of glue. Then if it still smells maybe soak it in water for a
few more days changing the water daily.

I got that line, but I was simply recommending a somewhat more cautions
method (ie: if it still smells after 48 hours, leave it for another 48, or
maybe 96, then if it still smells, let it soak in water, not just wash). I
didn't mean to come across rude in any way, form, or shape. :)

That's fine, normal silicon contains a mould resistant agent that will kill
any bacteria and therefore is not suitable for fishtanks, but people have
gotten away with making tankt from them for years though.

However, I'm a bit concerned becuase now after 24 hours I can still smell
the silicon, a rather unpleasant odour. I'm reluctant to put my piece of

Depending on the thickness of the silicon it can take days even weeks for
the silicon to fully harden but normally it should be just fine after 24-48
hours.

The smell that comes from true silicon os actually acetic acid (CH3COOH, pKa
= 4.76) and could potentially lower the pH in your tank but for the small
amounts normally used I wouldnt worry to much...

The smell can take a few weeks to go away depending on the thickness of the
silicon applied and temperature, I usually wait 3-5 days after I do silicon
woak on my tanks before putting the fish / water back in just to be on the
safe side.

There's 5 of them. One lives in the green vase to the left, (he didn't move

I know Americans have a thing about maggots, but don't know why? I know
they are disgusting, I don't like creepy crawlies at all (I am a woman after
all ;), but to me they are disgusting simply because they wriggle. I buy
them from a sports fish store, fishermen use them when fishing through a
hole in the ice.

Maybe it's because it's too cold for them here to develop anywhere we don't
like finding them we don't find them more disgusting than... say an earth

Might be longer than you think. Not too many ladies on this side of the
pond who would chop maggots for their zebras ;~) I have a hard time just
selling bloodworms, and they have to freeze their earthworms before they
get someone else to chop them up.

Have you tried earthworms yet? A little high in fat, so it can't be a
regular thing. I think the recipe is as follows: select choice red
wigglers, wrap them in wet newspaper for a day (so they can pass what
they ate), and then chop into mouth-size pieces.

The impression I have of maggots is a larger version of a beetle or small
cockroach. There would seem to me to be a lot of indigestible material.
Would small crickets be better (just have to figure out how to get them
to sink ;~).

Other foods of choice might be frozen beefheart, community menu and
cichlid delight (occasionally using the one with garlic, to stave off any
parasites). I've also heard good things about mysis shrimp.

Actually, it was eathworms I wanted, but they are not avialable this time of
year. They (sports fishermen) use maggots in the winter, so i decided to try
them instead. The Zebras love them, and thrive on them (they do get toher
foods as well though) so there must some nutrients in them? Part from the
tough skin, which is very thin it loooks very protein rich what's inside
them. I wouldn't like to think I put myself through this feeding procedure
for no reason :P

When the summer comes I'll get some earth worms for them, and thanks for
pointing out that I will have to let them get empty first, I wouldn't have
thought of that!

What's community menu I wonder..?

hehehehe not for long I'm sure! :D

Might be longer than you think. Not too many ladies on this side of

the
pond who would chop maggots for their zebras ;~) I have a hard time

just
selling bloodworms, and they have to freeze their earthworms before

they
get someone else to chop them up.

Have you tried earthworms yet? A little high in fat, so it can't be

a
regular thing. I think the recipe is as follows: select choice red
wigglers, wrap them in wet newspaper for a day (so they can pass what
they ate), and then chop into mouth-size pieces.

The impression I have of maggots is a larger version of a beetle or

small
cockroach. There would seem to me to be a lot of indigestible

material.
Would small crickets be better (just have to figure out how to get

them
to sink ;~).

Other foods of choice might be frozen beefheart, community menu and
cichlid delight (occasionally using the one with garlic, to stave off

any
parasites). I've also heard good things about mysis shrimp.

San Francisco Bay Brand (or Sally's) is a frozen/freeze-dried supplier
which is commonly available here. http://www.sfbb.com/index.htm

They started out with packaging brine shrimp for hobbyists, and have
since expanded their 'menu':
http://www.sfbb.com/products/fishfoodproducts.htm

Another supplier commonly available here is Hikari
http://www.hikariusa.com/products.htm , and then there is the Watley's
frozen foods too.

Sometimes I think the fish eat much better than we do, but at least we
enjoy spoiling them :o)
