I was born in the early 70's too. When I think back to those days I had it a lot better than I thought back then. My first computer (technically) was one of those space invader led games and my first REAL computer was the commodore vic-20 which I didn't get the support to really take advantage of it (graphics, sound, memory) until 2 or more years after we first bought it. At first all I could do with it is basic basic programming, and back then I thought wrongly that it wasn't capable of redefined/bitmap graphics without special hardware added to it. Oh well, things could have been better but we were still spoiled rotten by our parents and adult guardian types. My mother had angel fish up until I was about in 2 nd grade and I started my own hobby in fish keeping in 6 th grade. Good luck all and later! |

Your kids have it made in the shade. When my son was young (60s and 70s) I thought he was spoiled with a color TV in his room! Oh, his grandfather bought it for him. He never asked for his own phone. I had a phone in my room at 15 but had to pay my own bills from my job. I was also expected to buy my own clothes. Since I never cared much for TV I didn't have one until after I was married. I did have an aquarium in my room. ;-) Having more space after I was married I bought a 20Long, then a 30g........ Anyway,....kids sure have it different these days. -- Koi-Lo.... I think it started after WW II..returning GI's seeking a blissful retreat
from their horrific experiences over Europe. Soon to follow was the Korean conflict...the Cuban Misslie Crisis, the British Invasion, Drugs,Sex & RocknRoll, then the Kennedy assasination... the Vietnam era...IMHO..it seems that parents were dealing with a fear-factor of a government two-stepping left and right on Capital Hill, -and parents wanted to spoil their children out of that fear. It's understandable in a sense. I hope my rambling isn't found offensive. In my room growing up, I had a transistor radio, my pellet rifle, a barbell set and a 10g w/airstones, a rocker and two dogs. I had my household choirs for allowance and every summer cutting yards for the neighbors. Wait..the fish were spoiled too..best I can remember!! I think the tap water was better back in the '60's as well. My local water, back then, was so pure that it didn't require ANY treatment until it became law. |

It's understandable in a sense. I hope my rambling isn't found offensive. But it wasn't that generation (baby boomers) that were spoilt rotten. I lived in a middle class neighborhood and just about all us teens were expected to get pt jobs and contribute to our support. It never occurred to us that our parents should provide the expensive "in style" clothing, radios or hi-fi's, TVs and phones for our rooms. Those luxuries we supplied for ourselves. My mother told me later on that taught us the value of a dollar, managing money and good work ethics. She was right as I've never been in debt in my life. In my room growing up, I had a transistor radio, my pellet rifle, a barbell set and a 10g w/airstones, a rocker and two dogs. I had my household choirs for allowance and every summer cutting yards for the neighbors. Before the age of 15 I also had chores to do and was paid $5 a week to do them. Ugh! :þ I despise housework to this day. Wait..the fish were spoiled too..best I can remember!! I think the tap water was better back in the '60's as well. I think the tap water was better back in the '60's as well. My local water, back then, was so pure that it didn't require ANY treatment until it became law. I think it depends on what kind of spoil you do, and how your children handle it, I also think people do it for several different reasons, kids today are very different then years ago.. My husband lost his mom shortly after he was born ..from cystic fibrosis, her family blamed him, he had it hard growing up, so he thinks its his job to make sure our kids are happy, I think because he was not, We always laugh because every one fusses over our kids, they are so sweet, they will do anything for you, they have such good manors (which is hard to find these days) now lord knows they don't always act that way at home, and we always say send those kids to our house (we sometimes lock our selves in the bedroom to get a brake lol), but we are glad they know how to act out side the house, all three are high honor roll students, two go to the gifted center, and all in all they are good kids, If at any point these things would change like their grades or behavior, all their things that we work hard for them to have would be ripped out from under them quickly, but I have to say they do choirs every day, do homework before they go any where and both older ones play sports and have practice five days a week, so they are good kids we don't mind spoiling them because they do what we expect of them..
