What fish should I try

I am trying to figure out which fish can tolerate a high PH (8.4). Over the
past year I have tried several fish including neon tetras, platys,
Corydoras, Ottocinclus, angel fish, betas and one other kind of tetra that I
can't think of right now. The fish usually live a few weeks then die. My PH
is usually pretty close to 8.4,GH 300 ppm, KH 300 ppm. I am tired of losing
fish and I am about ready to give up. Right now I have 4 platys and 1 angel
fish (yes, they really do get along fine together.)
I am hoping that someone here can tell me what fish like or even tolerate my
water conditions.

Thanks

Karen

Endler's livebearers. Although the angel fish would eat the babies.

Hi Eric. I had forgotten that I have tried Zebra Danios too. They all died
within a few weeks. I will add the others that you reccomended to my list. I
will have to be flexible when I go shopping because there are very few fish
stores around here to choose from.
Thanks

Karen

Thanks Charles. I don't think the angel fish wold be a problem. I have three
tanks, so I couls just separate them.

Hmmm....Do you travel a long distance to get your fish? Do you add a lot of
fish all at once? I'm thinking something other than pH or hardness could be
the problem here.

Ok in my opinion, you should try trade in your fish for a discount on some
small african mbuna.
How big is your tank?
Even some lake victorians would be cool
I think breeding african cichlids is the most fun I have had with this
hobby, with a cycled tank it's bloody easy too.
long lived fish as pretty as marine fish and with babys large enuf to just
eat ordinary cichlid flake.
rokin
we also have the best partys bar the reefers
heh heh

Nope
I just buy my fish at Petsmart. I know it isn't the best choice, but that's
the only source of fish within 30 minutes of me.
I only add a few fish at a time. I have has successful tanks before and I
know better than to add too many fish at once.
I am currently using a 29 gallon tank, but I have a few others. My tanks are
29 gallons, 20 gallons, 10 gallons, and a tiny tank that has a capacity of
about 1.5 quarts.
I'm pretty sure the problem is my water. My platys had fry only once. That
was just about two weeks after I bought them. Most of the fry died. Some of
the fry were not viable at birth. They just looked like round balls. Most of
my platys have dies (I have 4 left) and they have not had fry again.
Before I moved here, I had tanks with plattys and they had more fry than I
could keep up with.
I haven't had a salt water tank for about two years, so I don't remember
what the PH requirement is of most sal****er fish. Maybe I should research
that.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll add them to my list of fish to research. The
tank I am using right now is 29 gallons.

I'm just taking my first steps into reef - my pH in that tank is 8.4
which from research is about right.....I am using RO water and buffers
to get to this....

My tap water has a pH of around 8 and is like liquid rock - I keep
Africans and Rainbows but also some sof****er fish (neons etc) - no
problems with platys, gouramis or Clown Loaches - maybe you could try
adding driftwood or a CO2 unit to lower the pH but I would play with it
before going overboard on the fish until you are happy that you can keep
it at a stable level....

then research this
3 x electric yellow (just get 3, worry about sexing them later)
3 x blue pindani (try for 1 m and 3 female)
3 x aceii (msuli point) just get 3 and worry about sexes later
1 x any lake victorian cichlid (nyerie, xmas fulu, brownea, crimson dawn)
try for 1 male and 2 girls!
1 x any peacock ( i reccomend, 'rubin red' 'dragon blood' 'mulana' 'benga')
1 x bristlenose catfish to eat algae
1 x hoplo catfish to scavenge missed crumbs

it would make a very pretty display, would require a slow build up stocking
and once stocked weekly 25% water changes
you would need adequate biological filtration as these fish are active and
like their food hence produce lots waste
You also need surface water agitation to oxygenate the water.
It's not hard and does look good but you need to divide it up into little
steps and take it slow
otherwise piece of cake hey
:)

=======================
Our water is both hard and alkaline. All the livebearers thrive in our
water as do the African Cichlids. I haven't had much luck with the soft
water tetras so haven't had any in years.
