Give them a few places to hide, and don't expect to see them much for a
while. They like to burrow and hide, and depending on the type of tank
won't be seen much during the day. You might assume they've died, then
find them during a tank strip-down.

They're lovely little creatures, I see mine quite a lot but I have a
heavily planted tank with plenty of cover and see them quite a lot
rummaging around the bottom of the plants and around the driftwood.

Depending how in-depth you're wanting to get, you could add a batch of sand
under a hiding spot for their tender underbellies. I read somewhere that if
there are sandy areas for them to dig, and you plant in gravel (with other
precautions most likely) then they'l keep to their playpen and not muss your
arrangements too much.

Make sure that you have a pre-filter. When cleaning my Eheim, I found two of
them in the bottom of the canister:-(

When they spawn, the fry are worst than the parents. They get everywhere
(even under UGF plates) and can never be found until you do a tear down.
Great little fish though, try to keep them in large numbers (5-6).

I have a bunch of questions, so here we go:


What should I feed them, I have heard they sccept flakes then I hear
only live food then i hear they will eat bth. What should I be feeding
them?

I am afraid that during a water change they will getsucked up by the
siphon and I will unknowigly throw them out with the bad tank water.
How could I avoid this?

How can I prevent them from entering the filter?

Do they have any unique needs?

Do I need to put sand in the tank or will they be fine with gravel
(not circular or round gravel)?

Those are my questions for now, I will be grateful if anyone answers
even one.

I never found them to be very demanding. Flake food will do it. They
have small mouths. I'm sure they would ingest anything else which fit
(bottom-feeder tablets, brine shrimp etc).

They get pretty big, 3", and very fat when filled with eggs. Your not
likely going to suck them up as adults. They don't like bright light, so
don't gravel-vac in the dark ;~) Babies is another story, but that's
life. They don't tend to hang out in the front where you would be gravel
vacuuming. They like lots of plant cover, and you would not be gravel
vacuuming under plants so much, so use lots of plants.

How can I prevent them from entering the filter?

It's only when they are small enough to get through the strainer, or hop
up the powerfilter waterfall. Use a canister filter, keep your siphon
off the substrate, and if they are really small (or spawning), use a
sponge pre-filter.

Do they have any unique needs?

Dim light, lots of cover. Give them a substrate they can tunnel in and
you might never see them again (good or bad, you decide). Give them a
small dark cave (top of a coconut shell with a hole drilled in it).
They are very susceptable to hot water (dying at 95F) and should be kept
well below 80F (ie: 74-75F).

Do I need to put sand in the tank or will they be fine with gravel
(not circular or round gravel)?

Don't use sharp gravel, otherwise experiment. I liked Jessica's idea of
a sand pocket in the gravel, but I never found that they upset anything
in the tank. you could take 2 pots. Fill one with sand and bury it in
the gravel. Take the other and turn it upside down over the first (cave
shelter and sand to burrow in). Maybe drill a little hole in the side.

my kuhlis seem to do well. A few of them were gravid a while ago, so
they're either happy enough to breed or trying to sustain the species by
breeding... :)

I kept & spawned them around 78F. Later I read about their
susceptipility to high temperatures. Who knows? ymmv

They move pretty fast when you stir up the gtravel. It is not likey tobe a
problem.

They love fine well rounded sand. I used to have some in a tank with #30
sand. They would burrow like gophers .. at top speed too. Of course in
those days one was named dufus .... he thought that if his head was buried,
so was the rest of him, Always hid with it's tail sticking out. They tend
to hide under "bushes" in my flourite tank but burrow under the finer Red
Sea substrate in another tank.

What kind do you have?. My LFS has had black ones lately.

HOW TO COOK KUHLI LOACH.

I was given this recipe by a friend who was both a michelin cheif and
fishkeeper who once had more kuhli loach than he could manage. Due to the
flavour of kuhli loach it took him 4 years to perfect this technique.

Heres what you do.

1. Find a clean, unpolluted beach with a southwesterly breeze and plenty
of sandunes with scrub grass growing on the southerly sides.
2. look for some driftwood. Find a nice piece of flat wood with a little
but not too much algae.
3. Take the driftwood home and clean it, scrub it gently so as not to
remove all the algae, rinse clean with boiling water and ensure there is no
sand or barnacles.
4. take enough tin foil to cover the driftwood 4 times over and lay it
out, place the driftwood in the centre.
5. Remove the loaches head just behind the gills, gut it and cut the
fins off.
6. Place the loaches on the wood, if your wood is 9-10 inches long then
you will need about 4*4 inch loaches spread along the length, season these
with sea salt, pepper, grated garlic and lemon juice.
7. Gently tease the edges of the foil up crinkle it together to form a
loose parcel with plenty of air inside.
8. Place parcel in the middle of a hot oven (200c - gas mark 6) and bake
for 30 minutes.
9. Carefully (it will be hot) tear the foil away from the parcel, make
sure the loach is cooked through.
10. To serve, scrape the loach off the wood and into a bin or waste
disposal unit.
11. Eat the wood, its got more flavour.

This is the only fish joke to ever make me spurt guiness out of my nose at
the pub. The guy telling me it used the pretence of it being an old chinese
recipe for goldfish. He went into such detail and was so believable that
when he said the punchline I nearly fell off my chair... not as funny in
text form tho :/
