Raccoon Repellent
I thought about that - in fact I was almost out the door to buy a dozen of
them when I realized that even though I haven't see froggy for about 6 weeks now, being he was my favorite creature in the pond, I'd hate to find him stuck in a mouse trap. That's when I came up (with what someone named) , "The MacGuyver electric COON-B-Q". BK "EliezerE" wrote in message ... Has anyone tried putting a bunch of mouse traps around their ponds? They helped me scare the coons away, and I haven't found any squirrel paws or bird beaks in them, so they don't seem to be hurting the local fauna. |

I've heard of putting upside down mousetraps around the pond to scare herons. Tell more about your experience. Did you hear them when they encountered the traps? -- (@#$%%!@#*&!!!!!! ;-) Did you find traps that had been tripped? When they left did your traps stay untripped later on? k30a |

I found them tripped in the morning several times, and then they pretty much
were left alone and remained untripped, unless there was a heavy rain, which did trip them. My plants have been left alone since I put them out. Theyre pretty ugly, though. I was thinking of spray painting them a decorator black. And I have to take them in whenever there might be children around. |

Long message warning : ] This is so funny, because I posted on
alt.garden.pond.chat about my raccoon problem a few days ago.. First time I've been on Ngroups in a while. I was perusing the articles there, and saw - where is everyone?- and it suggested this site, so with contined no response, I thought I'd check here. Well, here I am- first looksie, and I see this long thread about raccoons! My very problem! Well, there hasn't been any response to my query on alt.garden. so I hunted around town and found a water garden nursery, and guess what they suggested -- COYOTE URINE! I paid $17, normally 19. I haven't tried it yet, because, well, frankly, it is weird. we've had lots of jokes, and I'm a bit scared of attracting real coyotes (who used to live in this area- & prob still do a few miles away). The nursery's other suggestion: get rid of water hyacinth- the only plant coons are attracted to. So I did an experiment, and last night the raccoons decimated my bowl with hyacinth in it in the backyard, and swiped a water lily flower from the wkiskey barrel in front yard, but no other damage. So, you might also try removing your hyacinths "bobkiely" . I feel better about the coyote urine now. I guess I'll give it a try and buy some more fish (the coons had gobbled all my fish and turned over 2 plants in my newly set up whiskey barrel!) Any tips for leaky barrels besides a stiff ugly liner? I'll try the mouse traps too. B-infoseeker |

Hey Hank,
My raccoon family (on their 2nd attack) ate only the water lily bud- but no overturned pots. I don't have fish yet again (total all you can eat buffet). I wonder if they are attracted to the lily flowers. They also totally ruined an experiemental pot with water hyancith (I was told coons like it). So I wonder if lily's should also be on that list. Sheesh! Before eating the hyacinths again, they hadn't come around for a few days, which makes me wonder if they only "hit" every few night or so. Or, they were stuffed after eating my fish and parts of plants, and needed a few days breather. So, I'm sympathizing with you! B "Hank Pagel" wrote in message ... OOOPS! Did I say the P word? You can't negotiate with terrorists - the same goes for gophers, moles, racoons, rabbits,
ground squirrels, giant antler'd rats.. Once they're in the trap, shoot them! It is hard to miss 'em, but if you do, you can try... try again. :-) In article , "Hank Pagel" writes: #3 is filling the trap (This is one big mother and I mean that literally)The only damage this morning is some of the watercress that is left is uprooted. We are going to see how fast an old, bald-headed fat guy can run when he opens the trap to let this one out. What am I going to do now? Well I am not going to remove all my water
hyacinths for sure. One of them is blooming. Actually I have to take the 5th on what my next step will be. All I can say that I believe in fate and luck. It was the raccoon's fate that he found my pond and also his bad luck that he has to deal with my defending it. If you think of them as a very large disease carrying rodent who wants to decimate all the work and money you've put into your pond as well as killing your pets, then escalating the force with which you defend it seems rational. And during that escalation if the size of the projectile has to increase slightly and the propellant changes from air to something that creates a larger echo across the lake, then so be it. After all, if he would just walk another 200 yards he would be at that 24-acre lake full of largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish and carp. He comes to my pond because it's a lot smaller and easier to fish in. Well, easier is not always better as there is a much bigger hazard to fishing in my pond. BK "infoseeker" reply by post thx wrote in message ... OH NO!!! What are you going to try next? Maybe I should return my urine (ha ha) now without using it. Those raccoons make water gardens hard to do (with fish). and, yes, I'm also at war with moles. And the moles are mocking me. They sit in the burrows and laugh- I'm sure of it. I stick mole bombs (sulfur) down the holes, and the next morning, the wrappers are unceremoniously tossed onto the grass right outside the hole! I feel for sure that they are just giggling their way through my lawn. And yes, I tried Castor oil a few years ago- man that stuff is hard to spray. The result? The best looking moles you ever saw! Hey, maybe this is a side business waiting to happen- if I could catch the critters! (And yes, tried traps, but it didn't kill the guy- and that was traumatic- for us. We actually freed the guy in a near by wild wild park- not pretty lawns). Perhaps the moles and raccoons are haivng laughing parties at my expense! Supposedly they like marshmellows. You have to tie them in as a raccoon once picked up the trap and shook the marshmellows out. The advantage is that your neighbor's cat usually isn't very fond of marshmellows. k30a |

And during that escalation if the size of the projectile has to increase slightly and the propellant changes from air to something that creates a larger echo across the lake, then so be it. snip Do you know someone with a mid to large sized dog? I know you are trying to convince yourself, because I see them as
highly intelligent mammals that just happen to be lower on the food chain than us. (No not a tree-hugger, just respect) I also would leave the fifth alone, booze and firearms don't mix. For me extermination would be the last resort. On the other hand we will see what tomorrow brings now that mama is relocated. I had to dump her out of the cage and she ran like hell. WHEW!!!! Me man! Vicious animals run from me! So much for the macho crap, glad she ran, I think she was faster than me anyway. "bobkiely" wrote in message news:OwiPa.586$zy.536@fed1read06... Hi all,
How about making up a diluted solution of tobasco (hot) sauce and sugar (to help it stick) and spraying it on your water hyacinths. Might make the rascals decide to change their diet. Not sure if it would injure the plants though. Perk |

dig vertical walls - racoons won't bother koi
I have had a pond for quite a few years, and every night the racoons come up
from the river, about 60 feet away, and not once have they bothered my fish. The walls are vertical, pond is over 3 feet deep, they will *not* go into the water if they can't touch bottom. We probably have a hundred racoons in the half mile radius, the Trask River is about 10 - 30 feet deep now, and never has there been a problem http://www.oregoncoast.com/blondie/digging2.htm click on the racoon pix at top. I never ever feed these wild animals, by the way. They were here first, I am the encroacher, don't mess with Mother Nature... She'll getcha! I don't think the east coast raccoons here in New Jersey subscribe to
the same magazines as the west coast bandits. After their raids the like to take a dip in the swimming pool. All evidence (foot prints, sand on bottom of pool and wet concrete) points to them entering and exiting from the deep end and not at the ladder. Anyway I have relocated three this year and five last year and will probably continue to do it in the future. They have never harmed my fish just snails, frogs and VF plants torn apart. Great photos and beautiful pond and web page. "160meters" wrote in message ...
