Do you name your goldfish?
 

Just curious how many of you give your goldfish names and, if you do, what
their names are and how you went about choosing names.

We have four orandas, one for each of us in our family. Each person got to
choose their own fish from the store and give it a name. My 5 year old
choose a small red/white oranda and named it 'Ko-Da' (after the baby bear in
Disney's Brother Bear). My 7 year old daughter named her slightly-bigger red
cap oranda 'Jade' (she liked the sound of it). My wife's red oranda is
'Sienna' for her color and mine is 'Snoopy' (no reason I can think of!).

It's amazing how attached we've become to these fish, especially after
giving them names.

Of course. In my younger days I had a series of goldfish with Scottish
names (Angus, Fergus, etc.).

I named one particular group of five ryukins after a British pop group of
the sixties (Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich).

For the past eight years we've had Cecil (named after Cecil Vyse in
Forster's "Room with a View") and Chuckie (after a character on
"Rugrats"...not my fault, I let my son name him).

Both these fish were won in school carnivals and for some reason---despite
a too-small tank and years of lacadasical maintenance on my part (which
I've recently corrected after lurking in this newsgroup awhile and
beginning to feel guilty)---they've lasted longer than any other fish we've
had. Just simple feeders, originally, now part of the family for as long as
they'd like to stick around.

Who wouldn't name their goldfish?

We have two veiltails, and two commons.

Our littlest fish is a veiltail, and we named him 'Jean'. He's got a
damaged mouth, so it looked a little busted on the right side. If
you're Canadian, you'll get this joke.

Our other veiltail is quite big, and we call him Swanson, 'cause he's
always hungry.

We have a white common that we call 'Pebbles'. She loves moving gravel
around. She seems more purposeful with it than just random
accumulating and spitting.

Our other common is named 'Zoomy', though we probably should have
named him 'Crazy' or 'Loco'. He can really move when he wants to, and
he enjoys backing up, and forcefully attacking the gravel, penetrating
quite deep.

I didn't - my son did. There is Flipper (yellow common), Diver (silver
and red comet (I think)) and, bizarrely, Alfred (small veiltail). I have
to say that if it were left to me they'd be "the fish". Or perhaps "the
yellow fish, the big fish and the frilly fish"...

I have a telescope who lost an eye, which we call "Lookie". My big Oranda
is called "Mac". I also have 3 ryukins, "Sam", "Maple" and "Angel". I have
3 new fish, all oranda's - a chocolate and 2 calico's, but I haven't named
them yet. I like to get to know them first and see what sticks. I was
leaning towards Coco for the Chocolate, but it's too obvious. Once they're
out of the Q tank and in with the others, it will be easier to see their
personality.

I want to spawn the Oranda's, but naming them does create attachments. My
daughter named our first 2 fish - Abbah and Ouda. Hey, she was only 7
months old at the time! LOL. Neither one made it, however, since her
mother didn't know about overstocking at the time - and the LFS told me it
was ok to put 7 fish in a 5g tank for a week while the 10g cycled! I was
lucky I didn't loose them all. Mac came out of that ordeal, but he was the
only one, and he was the biggest. Odd...

I had a couple of feeder goldfish for a couple of weeks which I didn't
name as I planned to trade them in at the shop, which I did.
Subsequently, I got two beautiful Siamese Dolls, calico Ryukin fantails.
I have no idea of the sexes of course (as of yet). However, as is often
the case for me with companion animals, plants, manifestations of Evil
incarnate, etc., their names came to me in a jiffy: Ruby and Raymond.
Ruby is really gold up around her head. Ray is very white on his back
half, with gold deep under the skin around his neck. My, they do the
most wonderful acrobatics in their 15H tank, flying straight backward,
doing backward loopy-dee-loops, and all sorts of fun dances. Ray seems
to really do his best to keep Ruby at bay right after feeding time,
which is one of the reasons I think he's a he. I couldn't imagine having
a living thing in my presence most of the minutes of the day and not
conceiving of its proper name.

I have 11 black moors. Of the adults I have named them Ozzy, Othello and Onyx
the babies are un-named at present.

We have had several goldfish - both comets and commons. We have three goldfish
left - all comets.
They are **Goldie** ('cos that's what everyone calls their firsh goldfish),
**Treasure** (keeps with the "Gold" theme) and
**Blackfin** (it had all its fins outlined in black when we got it - it's all
orange now).
We also had **Beauty** (it was the most beautiful, died at 16 months),
**Blackie** (had black spot on its head, died at 16 months),
**Frosty** (white comet, died at 16 months - a week after Beauty),
**Smoky-Joe** (a smoky grey common),
**Silver** (one of the original 5 - kept with the "Goldie/Treasure theme, died
a week later),
**Snowball** (our hugest fish. Gave to friend with large pond and it turned
orange and was renamed by new owner to "Tangerine")

Our pond fish are all named after Thomas the Tank Engine characters...
Percy, Lady, Stepney, Thomas etc...
