K30: Dwarf Frog Dead??
Hi K30 and other African dwarf frogs owners,
Sort of OT here but I've got a situation with one of my dwarf frogs and wanted to ask you a question as I remember you have/had these critters too. One of mine is +/-3yrs old. Yesterday he started wanting to be at top of tank, hanging onto the filter, floating near surface. He has never done that before. He is not bloated as in dropsey. Today he was on his back at bottom and I have put him in a separate jar 1/2 filled. He doesn't move but if I remove him from jar, his front limbs will slightly twitch. My question is, how long have your dwarf frogs lived in your experience? Also, I'm not sure if mine might actually be dead as he is not coming up for air. Any opinions from anyone keeping dwarf frogs are appreciated. The tank is 2 gal eclipse with filter, open top for air, 2 dwarf frogs + 1 cory. I did clean and replace the water this morning after discovering the frog but water quality was normal. Note that I feed them every other day, a small amount of frozen bloodworms or brine shrimp. The other frog is fat and sassy. This one has always been thin but healthy until now. Thanks in Advance. Sandra |
K30: Dwarf Frog Dead??
Thanks for the quick reply. I feel somewhat better knowing that they only
live up to 5 yrs. I'm fairly certain that he got his share of food as I watched for that but I appreciate your comment as I could see it would look like a possible reason. I would feel awful if I thought I starved him. He was a male and smaller than the other one who is female. They did the tadpole thing once. I'm pretty sure he is dead. I'll wait until tonight and bury him. Thinking ahead, I wonder if I should quarantine then add another froggie for my single one. The cory catfish thinks its a frog so its not as if she will be entirely alone. Thanks again for the advice. I 'loved' that frog. sandra "K30a" wrote in message ... Sounds like he is not long for the world. They can live up to five years. If the other one if fat and sassy and this fellow has always been thin I wonder if he has been getting his fair share of the food. I have three in a large cookie jar type container. I usually sprinkle the food in three separate places. So far, so good. But I did have two in a smaller container and I think one of them died because of food hogging by the other. k30a and the watergardening labradors http://www.geocities.com/watergarden...dors/home.html |

I understand they are hard to raise. I was hoping for a repeat this summer. Funny story, I had this original frog (ok... I named him Little Britches) for about a year before introducing his mate. He was sooooo happy to have a companion that he grabbed her and hung on for 3 weeks with intermittent breaks. After he decided she wasn't going anywhere they settled into a calm co-existence along with a tiny runt of a cory cat that I added when it was about a month old. The cory and the frogs would lie in a pile happy to be 'frogs'. I placed a shallow broken piece of clay pottery in the tank as a shelter and the frogs would be under there side by side with their faces sticking out and the cory resting on top. Sandra |
