columnaris?
 

Thanks for the advice on gravel a couple of days ago.

So my two fantails are now in their new 90 L tank, I've added a bit of
gravel from the old tank in the hope it will help the bio filer get going.

It's great to see them with a decent amount of room! But now I have a
proper light in the hood I can see something else which is less good. Both
fish have tiny white stringy bits on their heads, on the top of the head in
the middle, above and behind their eyes. The paler red one has slightly
reddish areas on the top of the head as well. (Maybe the darker red one has
too but they don't show up.) You can only see these if you look really
hard.
The white stuff is really tiny, almost like cobwebs.

I've looked at Ingrid's disease stuff on puregold and I wonder if this could
be columnaris. They have been in a tank which was too small and I did have
the problem with the gravel trapping waste. There is nothing in the mouth
though, as far as I can see.

Or could it just be regular "fungus"? I am not sure what the technical name
for fungus is.

I can't get hold of Potassium Permanganate - it's Saturday evening and I
doubt I can find a chemist open till Monday now. Is there anything I can do
in the meantime - would salt help? I also have a treatment - Interpet
aquarium treatment no 9 "anti-internal bacteria". It doesn't say what's in
it but it says it is effective against pseudomonas, aeromonas and vibrio
bacteria sp. and I have used it before and it seemed to help.

I should add that I used it before for something else, I don't think I've
had these particular symptoms before...

do a peroxide dip... NO MORE THAN 10 SECONDS
Jo Ann's PEROXIDE DIP for Goldfish
1 part 3% peroxide (like in drug store)
9 parts water
dip for 10 SECONDS ONLY

USES:
this kills flukes, both gyros and dacs
it does not kill much of anything else

see if this knocks the threads off... now, you are absolutely, positively sure these
arent anchor worms, right?
also... you can treat topically.. this is better than dumping something into the

I looked at your pictures. The "threads" are shorter and whiter and smaller
than the things in the picture for anchor worms, and there is no sign of a
forked end. It is as if the fish went in the attic and got cobwebs on their
heads. They are really tiny though, you can hardly see them unless you look
carefully.

But this morning they look better, some of the threads have gone. Do you
think it's possible they will get better on their own now they are in a much
bigger tank? Or should I treat anyway to be safe?

is open Sundays outside of town so will try there for PP today.

yeah, could be their slime coat is shedding instead of "something else".. so a little
salt in the water and the threads should disappear. 1 teaspoon of salt per 5
gallons. This can be increased to 3 teas. per 5 over a few days. Use rock salt with
no additives.
look for kordons product with PP in it, forget the name. Ingrid
