anenome question
 

anyone knows about plate anenomes, my lfs just got in about 4
of them-- they said it cant move in tank cause it doesnt have foot.
they showed me underneath of it looks like a solid base. also would 3
stripe clown host it. dont want my corals to get stung by this thing if
i buy it.

Not really anemones, but a coral.. fungia, or heliofungia. A LPS that belongs
in the sand and will appreciate hunks of food. They cannot move like an
anemone, but they can move themselves across the sand bed(slowly). Your clown
may use it as a host anemone, but its possible that the clown will irritate the
coral.

I have had several plate corals (Heliofungia, Fungia, and others). They
can inflate and move in the tank. This usually happens after lights out.
Unlike anemones, they don't usually climb over rock or obstacles. So
that is one way to "contain" them, by blocking them in. Mine have
seemed to greatly prefer sand locations but I have had them on rocks
too. I have had most success with orange plate corals ( I don't recall
the species, but neither a Heloifungia nor a Fungia). It's very
important to handle these guys gingerly. The tissue is pretty sensitive
and you must avoid allowing bubbles to form on underside when placing in
tank. Also, I have found short tentacle species to be easier to keep
than long tentacle species. My clown fish have tried to host on the long
tentacles and do indeed annoy the coral. Best wishes if you decide to
get one!
