I have an itt-bitty fish,...
 

Fer real! Today I went over to my local pet store and purchased a very
small [2=B9/=B2 inches long] Plecostomus [Pleco] catfish. But that's
not the fish that I am posting about here. Within the clear plastic bag
full of aerated fresh water and my little Pleco, was a little tiny fish,
no bigger than a pencil-tip. I have no way of telling just what kind of
fish it is. All I do know is that so far it's still alive, and that I'm
going to do what ever I can to help it grow as big as it can, and be
just as healthy as it can. It is currently residing in my Tank #3, a 10
gallon tank which is the only one equipped with a heater, and also
houses a very puny-looking' Betta splendens, or Siamese Fighting fish.
Hopefully the warmer water [85-6=B0F] will promote the skinny Betta's
["Pax"] appetite, because he looked so bad to the pet shop owner, that
he was going to throw him out, in part because the customers were making
so much comment about how sickly he looked. "Pax" is really super
skinny, especially when I place him next to any of my 10 other Bettas.
Hopefully he will get much better, but not so much that he thinks that
that almost invisible baby fish is lunch. And that the little tiny fish
will grow up to be full gown,...Like I said earlier, right now I haven't
the foggiest idea what species it is, and have as of yet not seen it eat
anything, even though I have offered it extremely small samples of every
type of flaked and pellet-type fish food that I have. Does any one have
any suggestions or comments about any of this? Pax Vobiscum,...~Dean.

I would separate the little one into a breading net (few $) or put a plant
or two in the tank, even if it's plastic, so he can hide.

Oh I did that straight away, just as soon as I saw the little one,...It
has some plastic branches with lots of plastic leaves to hide in on the
surface and just below, and at the same time, the leaves also help the
Betta feel more secure. I just wish that I would actually see the
little fish eat something,...Only when I have seen it do that, will I
quit worrying so much about the little booger, and get some sleep. My
ancient cat is soooo mad at me for turning on the light so

You might want to get some fry food and try that to see if it will eat. This
is probably a baby of some species.

Same thing happened to me. I put it in with the rest of the fish in the 55g
thank, but I haven't seen it since the first day...either eaten or sucked up
into the filter...or maybe still lurking somewhere (not likely). I had a
funny thought at the time that this little fish might be a pirhanna and all
of my fish would be in his stomach the next morning!

If Pax discovers him, then this tiny fish is probably known as lunch,
(Pax belongs to a long distinguished line of carnivores). Fry need to
eat much more often than larger fish, so you want to provide some type of
an ongoing source of food. Any old ornaments with nooks and crannies
will have micro-organisms and algaes which your itty-bitty fish can
nibble on. A bit of zucchini might be good (also for your pleco). A
tiny bit of fry food will tell you if he is eating.
