In the context of "sand sifting star" they meant all micro
animals living in the sand. All stars are carnivores and they
eat everything alive in your sandbed. Normally, detritus mean
decomposed or decomposing food remains not eaten by fish...

It is all that organic... stuff that settles to the bottom. It is waste,
food, die off, fish poop, and basically any other organic matter that
settles out in the bottom of your tank.

I would stay away from stars and get nassarius snails. I have read about
stars eating fish.
