newbie questions

1.) What does "swcd" stand for?

2.) Can a sump be placed inside a stand where there is complete darkness
all the time?
(I know what a sump does, but the loss of light may bring on unwanted
consequences,
so I thought I would ask.) -Chris

switching current water device = SCWD

Sumps need no light at all.

SCWD = switching current water device. It was invented by
3iQ a couple of years ago, and works nicely without
electricity. I incorporated one in my closed loop a couple
of years ago. http://www.melevsreef.com/closedloop.html

Yes, a sump can be in total darkness and this reduces
nuisance algae growth.
