how can I figure out what fish I've got?
Hi
our daughter has left home to go to college and left us with an aquarium full of fish. So I've been cleaning the filter every few weeks and feeding them daily. Now I'd like to know what they are. I think they're cichlids, plus a few small catfish. Is there some good website I can go to try and figure out what they are? Thanks T. |

Thanks T. do you have a way to take digital pictures and post them on a website? Many people here have lots of knowledge on specific fish so that might be an easy way to get free help. -- G.D.Smith Harpers Ferry, WV FOR SALE: 2003 Swee****er 22' Pontoon Boat http://icanhelp56.homestead.com/gs_pontoon01.html FOR SALE: 1999 Fleetwood Mallard 37' Travel Trailer http://icanhelp56.homestead.com/Mallard002.html |

Well maybe except I don't have a website, and photographing fish is kind of tricky. I was thinking more in terms of a website I could go to and type in "dark blue fish with protuding jaw" into a search engine, or something like that, and get some pictures back. T. |

If you have access to the newsgroup alt.binaries.aquaria, you could post the pictures there. Otherwise there are about 25,000 fish to choose from :o). You mentioned cichlids, so here is a tidy site which goes through a sampling: http://www.thecichlidgallery.com/ and for catfish, http://www.planetcatfish.com/core/index.php and select their catalogue. Otherwise, you really are best off by having someone look at them and get you pointed in the right direction. -- www.NetMax.tk |

If you could photograph your fish, we allow uploads at Fishaholics up to ten pictures. We also have a few species listed in our profile list with photos, along with quite a few pictures in the site gallery that could help you identify your fish. There's also new profiles being added frequently. Tim www.fishaholics.org |
Take a few pictures and post them up here. most people here will be able to ID your fish :)
Also try www.cichlidfish.com - a very good website with a great forum full of advice :) -- Posted via CichlidFish.com http://www.cichlidfish.com/portal/forums |

I've had a look through that website, lots of nice pictures but I don't see how I'm going to find a particular fish except by chance. T. |
Have you asked your daughter?

As much as I hate to write it, If taking a pic and posting it is not an
option, and surfing the fish sites for pics doesn't work. Maybe going to a LFS/LPS and picking up a book on cichlids, complete with pictures might be the soloution. -- Posted via CichlidFish.com http://www.cichlidfish.com/portal/forums |
