Kribs
Have had help from a few ngs to selection some smaller cichlids(3-4")
that can tolerate 8ish ph. Can Kribs handle this level? From the articles I've ready they are easily maintained and a good community fish. Is this correct? All the best, Larry Southern Ontario |

All the best, Larry Southern Ontario While kribs are great starter cichlids and can tolerate a wide pH range, chances are they won't breed in a pH of 7.8. They're better suited to a neutral pH but have bred with a pH as high as 7.4 or so. The higher the pH, the more males in the brood. I've been able to drop my pH down to 7.6 and had my kribs breed. Chances are, if acclimated properly, they'll be able to handle a pH of 8, I just wouldn't expect any fry to survive if they breed. Also, in a tank with only a pair of Kribs, you may want plants. With that high pH, your plant selection will be limited to java moss, java fern and annubias for the most part. Tim |
Thanks Tim,
Sounds like another choice for me. I'm going to wait awhile before I try to breed some fish. Need lots more experience first ;-} All the best, Larry Southern Ontario |

Until mine bred, I was sure the male would wind up killing the female, she
spent a long time living behind an internal filter cannister before she charmed her way to freedom. |

All the best, Larry Southern Ontario My single male Krib was an absolute terror in a normal community tank. He chased the clown loaches, stalked the cardinals, nipped at the corys, and confined the angelfish to the top third of the tank. So I used him to cycle a Tanganyikan tank and gradually raised the pH to 8.2. He was fine even with the added Kent salt mix, and found a comfortable place in the pecking order somewhere above the daffodils and below the N. leleupis. At this high a pH, his color was not as good as in soft water and he didn't display much. So, easily maintained yes. Good community fish...well, it depends on what you call a community. ;-) Elaine T Elaine T |
