food choices
 

I have a 1200 gallon pond with about 12 african cichlids and two medium size
pleckos. Looking for advice on what to feed them. They've been living on Koi
pellets for the last few months. We've only been feeding them every couple
of days. They go crazy for food, but won't eat that much. My thinking is
that they don't like what I feed them.

What sort of cichlids are they? Cichlids from Africa vary from algae
eaters to predators so we need to know what are trying to feed.

Here's what I think I have:
Tropheus Moori Mpalunga, Pseudotropheus Zebra, Electric Blue, Zebra
Cobalt, Red Zebra, Red Top
I compared fish shown on Angels Hatchery to whats in my pond. Will these
guys eat anything alive?

All but the Electric Blue are algae eaters. They must have vegetable
food. If the pond is in the Sun there should be plenty of algae on the
rocks. Don't put any meaty foods in the pond. Meat will cause the
Tropheus to bloat eventually. The Electric Blue will be able to find
"pond life" to eat.

It depends how much algae has grown in your pond. If the pond has lots
of algae available and the fish are eating it they won't need more
food.

The water is gin clear, amazingly so. There are no rock structures, but the
pond walls are somewhat slick. I'll keep feeding daily or a few times per
week. I'll look for pellets for Cichlids, veg based.

i found a pellet which is heavily loaed witrh wheat germ, these wouldnt
be touched by my oscar but my silver dollars (veggy pirana things)
loved them. its a good bet that anything with wheat as the base is a
good veg food.
