I don't think it will, since spam has been with us forever - - -

We've been through moderation discussions before here at RAFC. In late
1996 and early 1997 we had a very serious "flame war" about "robo-
moderating" rec.aquaria.freshwater.cichlids. At the time, the group was
experiencing over 100 new posts *per day* (!). We wanted to organize it
a bit so we could get a handle on the volume of posts. I came out
against moderation because I was for splitting the group into smaller
forums; but others were pro moderation. If I remember correctly, the
vote was pretty close but the anti-moderation folks won. Then, to begin
splitting the "post load" down, I created the newsgroup
"alt.aquaria.oscars", but AFAIK no one else followed suit in creating
new newsgroups. However, Usenet in general, and
rec.aquaria.freshwater.cichlids, have slowed quite a bit, I guess
because of the proliferation of internet forum sites. (I'm posting this
from cichlidfish.com, where I am an administrator) I think because of
how few messages are posted at RAFC, it would be silly to start
moderation discussions again.

I personal think , If you want a moderated group, you go to a forum, with
valid e-mail address, and uniform rules.
As for the Sweet Young Thing, ""young 30 something looking for"" She can
pop round and clean my tanks ,anytime, Then there's the housework, wood
chopping, Lawn mowing. Long walks in the country.
Am I dreaming,,, I think I might be, bassett

On top of this, the NAN team now has a policy against adding moderation
to existing newsgroups. Even if a group were to go through the RFD
process, after the rec.screenwriters.moderated mess (which still hasn't
died down yet), you have a better chance of seeing God than getting a
split approved.

Which is exactly why I went to alt for the Oscar newsgroup -- no splits
required, just send out the control messages after the discussion and
sit back! --Mark

It's easy enough to make the spam and it sits at the bottom of the list all
greyed out no matter how new the recent replies to it are.
