Do Scales Grow Back? - Is a filter absolutely necessary?
 

we are in the process of moving our comets to a larger tank. he's lost
3-4 scales from bumping around things in his now too small tank. will
they grow back?

Now that we have to get a larger tank, its location will have to be in
a place that sort of needs to be quiet. Have 2 comets going into a 20g
tank. I always do the regular water changes and skim off the obvious
stuff off the gravel. The noise of a filter may be a problem. Any
major problems not using a filter. I'm going to use a air stone.

Get a submerged filter. I have a Duetto in a 10 gallon tank and it's
absolutely noiseless.

And the airpumps I've seen are noisier than even a hang on the back
filter.

It is very necessary to use filtration in a goldfish tank. They
actually require twice the normal amount of filtration (if you want
them to stay happy and healthy) I use two power (HOB) type filters and
at least one or two air stones on all my tanks. Whisper power filters
are fairly inexpensive and quiet. They can be used with or with out
carbon and you can find them at Walmart, Petsmart or any local fish
store.

I have a good old fashion Petsmart variety hang on the back of the tank
filter. It's not as nice looking as a cannister or gravel filter, but as
long as I keep the water level right, you don't even know the filter is
running.

Certainly nothing wrong with Petsmart filters be it intank power or
hand on the back, they are made by Tetra and sold at a much less
price. Unless your interested in lots of water changes why not use a
filter........The new filters that hang on the back or go into the
tank are so quiet, you have to look at the water to see if their
working or not. Probably less than $20.00 for one in yur size range. I
just bought 4 Petsmart 20-40 filters for $15.00 each hang on back work
great super in a 20 gal tank

Depends on if the root or cuticle is still intact or damaged. It may,
but most fish scales when lost remain lost especially if thru
parasites or sores and ulceration. Simply bumping them and knocking
them off its anyones guess. Fish do have relatively thick skin so
other than cosmetics a few here and there will not hurt anything. I
have a koi with about 1 and a half sq inches of scales missing, and it
does just fine.

Yes, eventually. They may be the wrong color (white/clear) but they'll
grow back.

In my experience, it's the airstones that make the most noise.
A good -- i.e. expensive ;-) -- canister filter in an enclosed
stand is pretty quiet. I have a Fluval-104 on a 20G, and I like
it fine.

And yes, you probably would have major problems not using a
filter. Certainly goldfish were successfully kept for centuries
prior to the invention of motorized filters, but I suspect they
did _daily_ water changes, and not those piddly 10% things either.
