Is it true that the common Chinese Algae Eater doesn't really eat any algae?

I don't know, but I've got 2 Siamese Algae Eaters (one per tank) and
they never stop. BTW, my LFS was out at the time and I found a whole
tank of them at WalMart - go figure.

Now if I could just get rid of the blue-green stuff ...

Young chinese algae eaters (CAE) do eat algae. The problem is that
older CAE get very aggressive and like to suck patches of flesh off of
other fish. Better choices depend on the size of your tank and the
types of algae you need fish to eat and include Otocinclus, siamese
algae eaters, Ancistrus spp., Farlowella spp., mollies, certain snails,
and algae eating shrimp.
