new fish suggestions?

I am in the process of cycling my 55 gallon freshwater tank and am
looking into what types of fish to get. I am new to this whole thing
but my boyfriend has had tanks before. He has always liked cichlids
because they tend to be hearty (i.e. generally easy to keep alive),
colorful and social. These are certainly the traits I am looking for
but I know cichlids are prone to fight and be very territorial. I am
looking for suggestions on what types of cichlids mix well with each
other and other types of fish. And also what other types you might
recommend. I also know that I would like a catfish of some sort so any
catfish suggestions would be wonderful as well. I would like a
variation and just need some expert opinions on who gets along with who
:) THANKS!

If you want cichlids, I used to keep the combination of Texas Cichlid,
convict, firemouth, sylvani, Jaguar, and Jack Dempsey. These are all
pretty tough fish, the Texas usually was top fish. A bad thing is that
there is always the possibility of them beating each other to death.
For the catfish a standard plecostomus was kept, nothing will bother it
its too tough.
I have switched my tanks to community tanks now and feel they are
more relaxing to watch. Some hardy community fish in my experience
a black neons, head and tail-light tetras, glowlight tetras, zebra
danios, white clouds, and buenos aires tetra.

Welcome to the hobby! I am pretty happy with the assortment I have. Of
course my tank is 120 gal so you might not be able to have all of these.
Take your pick they all seem to get along well with each other.

p.s. I also have a livebearer tank and they are pretty much fun also,
