Goldfish With Warts
 

Could Anyone Tell Me What Is Wrong With My Two Orandas. They Both Have White Wart Like Growths On Their Tailfins And One Has A Large Tumour Like Growth On Its Eye Whilst The Other Has White Cloudy Eyes. The First Mentioned Fish Also Hangs Near The Bottom Of The Tank Continuously. Neither Have Feeding Problems.

I AM DESPERATELY TRYING TO LOOK AFTER THESE FISH WHICH I INHERITED FROM A RELATIVE.

Check your water conditions. Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate and PH
Also how big is your tank?

I am not sure on how you test for Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate but I have tested the PH of the water which was 7.2. The tank we have at the moment holds just over 20 gallons but I have just purchased a Juwel Vision 180 which holds 180 litres. They are not in the new tank as yet as I am currently treating them with an anti-bacterial remedy.

Kirsty,

You will need to buy test kits to test these. It is very important to
do this from time to time, especially when problems are occuring.
Sometimes you can take water samples to your local fish shop and
they will do a test for you.

Lumpy growths are usually viral and resolve with time. The very large
growth could also be caused by lymphocystis virus.

The eye problem is likely eye fungus. An antibacterial will not be as
helpful as a proprietary eye fungus treatment or malachite green.

I don't think your relative was taking very good care of the fish. :-(

I bought some amonia and nitrate kits and tested the water in the tank. The ammonia levels were ok but the nitrate levels were high at 80. When we went the our local shop they said that the nitrate level would not harm the fish. We have also bought another bacterial remedy to try and eradicate the problem with their cloudy/growth on their eyes.

Thanks for the picture but the growths on their fins do not look like that. We have not been able to purchase malachite green at our local shop but have bought another bacterial remedy so fingers crossed this will work. Unfortunately I do not know a lot about keeping goldfish but I am learning as I go along and appreciate the help I am getting of everyone on this site.

Your local shop are idiots then. Nitrate will harm fish at high levels
and over a long period. If this was not true, what would be the point
of water changes? Try and get the levels down to 20ppm or lower, if
possible.

Check your filter immediately!

Are you using ammochips or some other amonia remover? Replace it or
take it out completely and substitute a good quality carbon.

Do you use resins? Are they old - more than 4 weeks or so? Replace or
remove.

Is your filter sponge clean or filled with debris? Rinse out with
treated tap water or (better) aquarium water from the tank and replace.

Do you use biomedia? Is it exhausted? Some (like the ones in the
Aquaclear filters) need to be replaced after 3 or 4 months. Others
only require rinsing.


Don't change everything in the filter at one time. Rinse the sponge,
change the carbon or amonia chips now. Change bio media in a couple of
weeks OR, mix new biomedia with old to seed the new stuff faster. You
should see IMMEDIATE improvement.

And don't add any medicines YET!
