Koi clay

I have heard koi clay is good for pond & fish. Does anybody have any
info on this. Is there certain kind?

There's been some discussion on this NG concerning koi clay. I use *plain*
kitty litter from Wal-Mart. It has no additives or deodorizing agents. I
toss a few handfuls over the plants monthly and that's about it. At the
rate my koi are growing and reproducing I must be doing something right.

Yes, it is supposedly necessary for good digestion and bright colors,
though I don't know if it is the clay or the minerals within. It is
important to get calcium (calcium montmorillonite also call bentonite) and
not sodium bentonite clay (which most cat litter are).

A good website of info and place to purchase:

at one time, so you might E them and see if that is still so. ~ jan

YOu certainly heard right..YOu need some calcium (southern type)
bentonite...stay away from the sodium(western type) bentonite which is
primarilywhat kitty litter is composed of......There is absolutely
nothing to be gained by dumping sodium (western) bentonite into yur
pond other than slimed up plumbing and slimed up pond liner etc etc..

If your fortunate enough to live in an area where foundry supplies are
sold, you can buy a 50# bag of calcium bentonite for a few dollars,
much cheaper than whats advertised and professed to have special
ingredients..its just calcium bentonite......look in the phone book
for foundry supplys......and get as fine as mesh as possible, anything
from 220 or finer is perfect.
