Pondsweep or Laguna powerflow?
Im in the market for a skimmer. I have been looking at the Laguna
Powerflow PT-1774, and the Pondsweep 700. Anyone have comments, suggestions, pros and cons of each design? Whatever you can give me. They are both the same price from my sources, so Its all going to come down to this post to make the decision. I am concerned about the weir on the pondsweep wearing out from flexing, and I am concerned about the weir opening on the Laguna not funtioning properly, binding and such. Anyone have dimensions of the "pump chamber" on both of these? I need to figure out if my pump will fit in them. Its a beckett 3600gph. Anyhelp is appreciated.... |

The Savio Skimmer seems to be the latest and greatest - you will need the larger one for that pump (I bought the smaller one - still not installed@#$#%) - put savio skimmer in a search engine to find what you need to know about the rest Gale :~) |
Yeah, ive looked at the Savios, were my first choice. But, also more
than I want to spend at this time. |

The only thing I'd do different (and will fix this fall) is to remove the skimmer door. Fish and frogs love going in it (not sure why), but with the door installed, they can't get back out. Even had a turtle end up in there once. I've got a flat rock resting on it right now to hold it down. Doesn't seem to affect operation of the skimmer in the least. The combination of the SkimFilter and Savio Livingponds biofall has worked wonderfully on my 1000 gallon pond. It's only 4 months old, but the water has been crystal clear from day one w/ very little algae, and now that the pond folks on this forum had me check the KH and add potash and liquid iron, the plants are doing great as well. Even my cheap, $24.95 "clearance" lily has, at last count, 32 pads and 1-2 flowers now. :) |

San Diego Joe 4,000 - 5,000 Gallons. Koi, Goldfish, and RES named Colombo. |
Gale, aren't all the savios the same size, just with different weir sizes?
No - they have 2 - The original one and a new "mini-skimmerfilter" , which is what I have - it will take 2 weir sizes a 6" and an 8" I think - the larger skimmer will handle larger pumps (up to about 5,000 gph or maybe more) - mine is limited to ~2500gph - the original one is also larger dimension wise Gale :~) |
So, no one here to comment on the Laguna or the Pondsweep?

I had the pondsweep, the one with the fabric type net in front, and then the filter pad behind that, and the accordian style door. It was okay- but the plastic seems thin for zone 5 winters, and the netting was kind of hard to get clean. I upgraded to a Savio when I redid the pond. My savio door closes- but water gets in- so it is harder to do a complete clean out.ll have to examine that closer when I get the chance. Good luck in whatever you decide. -- Koitoy |
