How to measure the length of a fish?

Just how do people measure the length of a fish? From the mouth to the tip
of the tail? The tail of a goldfish can vary from a fifth to a half of its
body and weigh only a fraction of its body weight. Is there a more reliable
way to measure fish?

Total length includes the tail. Standard length does not include the
tail.

It depends on what you want.

Tradition says that fish are measured from mouth to base of tail. Tail
should not be included in measurments at all.
