Who is picking on the betta?

We have had the large tank up and running for a week and a half now,
and all has been fine and dandy. The betta, who was the first occupant
of the new tank, this evening turned up with a small piece gone from
his tail. We are wondering who it could be...

2 dwarf neon rainbows
2 bosmani rainbows
2 Clown loaches
1 Plec

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Those are all pretty tame fish, though you might have a maniac in there
somewhere. Unless it gets much worse, I wouldn't worry *too* much.
Keep your eyes on the tank from time to time and make sure everyone's
getting along.

it could be the betta - some of them chase their own tales and shred
themselves...

In sequence:
the Bosemani
the Betta
the Neon dwarfs
the Clowns

You're just going to have to turn off the room lights, throw a big pillow
on the floor, open a bottle of wine, and watch them to find out ;~), but
for just one nick in the tail, all you might be able to see is a little
attitude from one of them.

Ok So I think the betta is doing it to himself. I have a couple of
times found him 'chasing' his tail, either that or I have found him
down on the gravel in a ball, with tail in close proximity to his head.
Now we need to know if there is anything we can do to make him stop.
Over the past week or so he has really done quite a job at shredding
himself. Do we need a few females for him? He is destined for a 10
gal tank with currently 3 neons and the CAE, we were planning more
neons once the tank catches up with the new additions we just made. I
wouldn't mind putting a few females in with him in the big tank, but we
are planning angels and gouramis to add soon.

Would 3 female bettas, the male, 3 black neons and the CAE overload the
10 gal?

Unless they were really good friends with very good filtration, I would
say yes, overloaded. I think the first constraint would be territory, or
space to hide when trouble in paradise broke out ;~). Also CAEs get quite
large.

Rainbow fish can be nippy and betta's taste good.
I have 5 rainbow tanks and all will turn a betta into a short fin in a few
days.
