Frozen frog
 

I can't belive this but I emptied out my SKIPPY filter some weeks ago and
about 2 in. of water remains at the bottom. The other day we had a frost
and I noticed in the bottom of the filter a "completely" frozen bull frog
approximately 10 in. long. I assumed that I was gona-have-to dispose of it
in the spring when the ice melted. To my suprise he came back to life today
when the temperatures went back up to 50 deg. F and the ice melted. I
picked him up and placed him outside of the filter, hoping he would find
another place to winter over.

Perhaps you can cover your filter to keep another one from entering it, and
not survive being frozen. All our filters are put away in an outbuilding.
I'm afraid if water caught in the bottom freezes, it'll split them.

One of my goldfish books actually states that the author flash froze
a goldfish for a couple to a few days and let the ice cube containing
the goldfish melt in luke warm water and the goldfish came back to
life. These creatures are wonderfully capable beings. Good luck and

The SKIPPY filter is made out of a RUBBERMAID water trough which is very
rigid and should withstand the freeze. It is used outdoors for watering
farm animals.

It _should_ but I would bet it isn't guaranteed. My dogs have water buckets
made (it seems) of the same material. They haven't split yet (in quite a
few years) but ice has definitely made them bulge in places they didn't
used to :-)

Congrats on the frog. I understand researchers have discovered that they
can actually generate a kind of glycol to keep the cells from rupturing in
sub-freezing temperatures. It must have been quite the surprise to see it
wake up!

Oh, I have an idea now. You use it as a filter; we use it a little
differently. We have one from the local Farm store set up as a "settling
tank-veggie filter" with a small aeration pipe splashing the water into the
back of said tank. Tons of gunk settles to the bottom. It works great! :-)
I do empty it in the winter though and leave the drain open. This way no
freezing problems and the silly birds don't drown themselves.

Frozen frog
 

When we went ice fishing the fish freeze instantly when they are pulled
out of the water. We leave the fish outside until we go back to the
cottage. When we put the frozen fish in water to thaw out, they start
jumping and come back to life.

I've read information about frogs and other animals that completely "freeze"
in the winter and come back to life in the spring--maybe this was something
similar?
