Baby Bettas - Day 6
All of the babies have been scooped into a net breeder using a cup
measure--they were free swimming when I got home from work yesterday, and Tony had probably eaten 3/4ths of his family. :( The microworm culture I bought died (as did one of the cory cats I have in a 10 gallon, everything purchased from a very well-reputed lfs. :| ) So the babies are eating flake food crushed into a powder--as far as I can tell they really are eating it, so maybe this will work. I think I'll try this again but do it right next time! Jamie |
Baby Bettas - Day 6
Jamie,
I'm new at this group, just got a hex 5gal and read your previous post on your babies and their parents-they got along after all :) Hope the babies do well, sounds like their appetites are working. Do you have the dried shrimp w/ flakes? Maybe they'll go for that eventually. I had some male bettas a while back each in a bowl, they didn't survive the winters but with the new tank, bio wheel & 3stage filter, heater, test strips, etc., looks like I'll try again. Good luck with the babies, keep us posted on how they are doing. health is wealth ko57 |

Also, have you seen the fry actually eating this powdered food? Can you see their little bellies, of so describe to me what they look like. I'm also curious about this net breeder. I've never seen any that had a small enough mesh to keep Betta fry inside it. Not saying there isn't, just that I've never seen one myself, and I'm quite curious. Sad that the microworm culture died off. How were you keeping it? Lastly, if you have a digital camera, is it possible to take a couple shots of these fry? |

I'm curious what you will be doing when their labyrinth organs start to develope. If not done right, you'll kill them. |

Can you see their little bellies, of so describe to me what they look like. I dumped a huge clump of hornwort and some elodea in with the babies, so I only see them occasionally. I have seen little eyes and tails darting at a speck of food, and then dart away and the speck is gone. At least I think I have, but this could simply be because that's what I want to see very very badly. ;) I'm also curious about this net breeder. The net breeder has an extremely fine mesh, almost like panty hose. I bought it at Wal-Mart, I think their brand is Aqua-Culture? They don't have it on their Internet site. Sad that the microworm culture died off. How were you keeping it? In a container on top of my aquarium, yeast/oatmeal and I suspect too much heat from the light. They were cooked. Lastly, if you have a digital camera, is it possible to take a couple shots of these fry? No digital camera. I want one for Christmas, keep your fingers crossed for me! Jamie |

Jamie Jamie, you never said if you did the research yet about raising Betta fry. What's the tank's temp at now? How do you plan on keeping the air above the tank (in between the tank's hood and water's surface) warm and very humid? If they reach the 2month mark, where are you going to house all the male fry? |

What's the tank's temp at now? 80 F How do you plan on keeping the air above the tank (in between the tank's hood and water's surface) warm and very humid? I have a glass lid between water and lights, lights generate heat (actually raising the tank temp 2 degrees/day) and cause water to evaporate and condense on the glass. I don't think this will be an issue. If they reach the 2month mark, where are you going to house all the male fry? 1/2 gallon mason jars. Yay Walmart! I also seem to have weird little bugs laying their eggs in the water - the eggs aren't visible but the larvae are (wiggly wormy things). I'm wondering if the babies can eat these eggs.... Their da says the larvae are delectable. Anyway so far everything is going well. Jamie |

If they breathe in chilly air while their labyrinths organs are developing, it'll kill them. So I don't know how you're going to manage to do water changes during this time. Being a cycling tank, that will be a problem. You were already having ammonia issue, right. Not knowing what these eggs are, I cannot say. Also, not knowing what "bugs" they are, I would advise you to do a search and figure it out. Some larvae of bugs are quite vicious and would eat those fry. (think dragonfly larva and you'll know what I mean). Keep a close eye on the bellies of the fry. They should be fat little porkers at all times. You'll be able to see whether or not their is food in their bellies. It's easily seen through their flesh and make sure they all have fat bellies. If neither is the case, they're not eating and the food is too large. Let me know if this is the case. You said you couldn't find frozen baby brine, and I do not recommend using boiled egg yolk, but I'm pretty sure you could easily find Brine Shrimp eggs that I can explain how to decapsulate to that youcan feed them directly to the fry without hatching the brine. Good job so far. |

Good job so far. Tiny nit-pic, labyrinth development starts at week 3 if water is 80F (later if water is colder). I've read that the water should be kept at 6" (till week 2), and then raised 1 or 2" at a time, with some effort to keep the protein layer minimized with an airstone (if that helps). -- www.NetMax.tk |
