help... terrible sores on foreheads
 

i was out of town for a week, and had a non-fish friend taking care of
the feeding...

when i got home, both my green severum and my jelly bean cichlid had
these TERRIBLE-looking white wounds on their foreheads... it's almost
like the skin is being eaten away...

i'm pretty sure it's not ick, i know what that looks like. i tried
taking pictures to include here but the fish wouldn't cooperate (they're
not big fans of bright lights)

any help on what it is, and what i should do to save them?

I would do an immediate partial water change and add an antibiotic like
Furanase or Furan-2 to the water as soon as possible.

Sound like Head and Lateral Line Erosion (HLLE) starting out. Sooner or
later the holes become bigger and infested with flaggellates, until the
fish eventually dies, if left untreated.
To treat, use metronidazole (flagyl) to kill off the infestation and
infection. Feed the fish a vitamin rich food and perform two water
changes of 30% a week, until the problem abates.

Can HLLE happen in only a week? I always thought it was a slow,
nutritional thing but I've only seen it once.

Sounds like they had a quarrel. Keep your water changes up, and they'll
probably be fine.

Battle damage on healthy fish in clean water tends to heal without any
extra help from us, other than our keeping the water fresh (low in DOCs).

If the water quality is poor, then watch for fungus, and treat as
required. jmo

Yep, could be that too... but this sounds all to familiar to me, having
lost a few to HLLE...
Yes HLLE starts out slowly, but once the pits are visible, it doesn't
take long for them to erode away at the forehead, especially.

The description made it sound like it happened suddenly, but without
pictures... have to hope the OP can judge himself on what the best course
of action is.

Well, so far so good.... thank you all very much for your advice and
help. I did a massive water change and added some general parasite
medicine... it seems to be working.
