"rust" on stones
 

I've some "rust" dust on my live rock, sand and glasses.

You can see what it is on www.geocities.com/bedford_ch and go to "Questions"
menu on the left.

I can't get this tank work correctly since I bought it (1 year ago). I've a
lot of algae (see 3rd picture on the site) and even if I remove some
manually, they are back 2 or 3 days after. (you can see the complete tank on
the link "Aquarium", the start page). Now, since I've changed 80% of the
water, and still changing 20% every week, I've this "rust".

Any idea ? What should I look for ? Somebody told me to change the sand, as
it may contain phospates.

Hi Gabriel,

Man, you have a mess on your hands. I take it you are in France perhaps?

Do you use RO/DI water, or tap water?

Your nitrates are too high, and need to be 20ppm or less.
Your phosphates are too high, and need to be .03ppm or less.

Please read this articles to help you get things back on track. Don't give up,
it is not too late.

My suggestion would be to buy a couple of Poly Pads. I used these when my
tank was new (and still do for a few hours a week). Put one of these where
water will flow through it and it will remove your nitrates and phosphates.

It's a lot easier than many large water changes, but some things will suffer
if you take the nitrate levels too low. I have a sponge that starts to die
back if I leave one in for too long.

Also, make sure you are not adding nitrate and phosphates with your water
changes.
