depends on what is in that rock, have you tested them for Iron, and heavy
metals, for a start for toxic things... ? Steve "Dan Norgard" Can Volcanic Rock be safely added as a base to the LR in a cycling tank ?? Thanks, Dan |

Not sure if there's any truth to this, but when I added volcanic rock to my
tank (back when it was a fish-only tank) I had an increase in nitrates ... one of the LFS said it was caused by the volcanic rock, so I took it out. I know another fish owner who used tufa (sp?) rock as a base rock with success ... personally, I used live rock throughout. "Dan Norgard" wrote in message ... No, so far I'm just toying with the idea. How do I test for all that?

I have made a lot of base rock from crushed coral and a concrete mix. I had
to "rinse" the rocks in trashcans in the yard for about a month before the levels came to 0 but it works great and super cheap. (for $20 you can make about 100 pounds). And I also use small pieces to start frags on, most that is exposed in my tank now has coraline on it and you cant tell the difference. You can find recipes on the net. The composition of the rock varies. Some fist stores sell rock that has
been tested. "Dan Norgard" wrote in message ... Hi; Can Volcanic Rock be safely added as a base to the LR in a cycling tank ?? Thanks, Dan |

Hi Dan
Do you mean 'man made lava rock? "The book of the marine aquarium" by Nick Dakin advises that Lava and Tufa rock are the best rocks to use in the aquarium (besides live rock...). Volcanic rock would of course be high in contaminants such as sulphur. I've had issues with Tufa before as it wasn't as easy to clean as I first thought...
