Look what interesting course announcement I have found:

I think I will join this class.

Seems Ron Shimek's papers have lots of controversey as compared to a
lot of others....I know of a few folks that have met him and one thing
they all said, was you need a ladder to get up to his levels as his
ego is pretty darn big, and is quite close minded when it comes to
others opinions other than his own.......That said, I have no real
experieinces with him other than a few of his publicaitons / books and
articles, which have helped me a great deal......ego or no ego, I
guess when your a recognized leader i yur field, you can afford to do
what you want......but he still seems like an extremely knowedgeable
individual whose works I certainly trust and find worthwhile.

When you mention controversy, you are thinking about Shimek's
papers disagreeing with aquarium-hobby literature or they are
disagreeing with other scientific papers ? If later, please specify.
I am curious. I have found a lot of aquarium myth debunking in
his papers, but did not read a lot of other scientific sources...

Since when do scientists or bio people agree with each other on everything
anyway.
Coffee is good, coffee is bad...

I'm sure the class would be very interesting.
However if you are just a hobbyist I would say that $175 would be better
spent on
beer and more corals for your tank.

Wait for the book.

In regards to dissa gree with hobyists or other sceintific type, well
both. I ouwld have to go back ad look and read the books to check for
diferences, but one thing and I will not say it was Shimek, that
stated it or the other person, but the charts on average reef temps
varied, as did specifics on salt water contents and the ideal SG and
other parameters and temps to keep a reef tank at.....One recomends
undersand filters or plenums and deep sand beds where shimek stated no
deep sand beds with or without plenum IIRC............

Tea, the book is bound to be cheaper. I picked up a copy (softcover)
of his titled.POcket Expert Guide to Marine Inverts......for 50 cents
at a used and trade in book store.....Same book at the LFS is over $20
some bucks.....This book is like brand new and not a mark anywher eon
the pages. Only thing I do not like about the book is there is very
little common names, its scientic names all the way.......I have a
hard enough time remembering common names yet alone scientific.

Interesting... :-)
I think you refer to the article "What are Natural Reef Salinities
and Temperatures.Really..and Does It Matter?"
Is there incorrect data about reef temperatures/salnity he quoted ?
What could be the disagreement if facts are correct ? Just curious...
Unfortunatelly, I have no chance to do measurement of sea temps
and salnity so I need to rely on what is in scientific papers...
If his quotations are false, than what is the truth about temps on the reefs?

Shimek is recomending sand beds. I would like to know a different
point of view on this subject from a different marine zoologist...
Do you know a scientist who is opposite to deep sand beds ?

Do you suggest this book is equal in value to the course announced ?
I am not sure you if you can compare the value of a book to active
participation in an online course but if that book was so good it was
probably worth every penny... ;-)
