Ocean Chemistry Question
According to what I've read, the iron content in our aquariums should be
almost nil. When I lookied up what it is in the oceans, it was almost nil. (0.000006 ppm). Well here is my question for all you geology/chemist brains out there. If the earth is made up of mostly iron, should there not be a high iron content in the world's oceans? Why isn't there? And that is my question of the day. I am just curious, it is not important for my tank, as I don't even test for iron. GB |
Ocean Chemistry Question
The crust of the Earth (where the oceans are located) consists mostly of
silicon and oxygen. Iron is a small percentage, less than 10% I think. "George Burnt" wrote in message ... According to what I've read, the iron content in our aquariums should be almost nil. Well, first you are way off on your numbers.it is .002 ppm
Second "If the earth is made up of mostly iron, should there not be a high iron content in the world's oceans? " No Why isn't there? ... Try reading these http://www.seismo.unr.edu/ftp/pub/lo.../interior.html Hi Boomer This link above I found highly fascinating. I'd like to do some further reading on marine ecosystems and oceanic stuff like the link above, not just on Iron but general goings on (experiments and stuff:). If I go to google what sort of search strings do I use? Do I just search for marine biology and hope I get lucky? About the link above: I think they're playing with disaster if they start dumping too much iron in the oceans, it might be good for the phytoplankton but what long term effects will this have on the rest of the oceanic populations? Dangerous stuff even if it is controlled. Highly fascinating nonetheless JA? -- **So long, and thanks for all the fish!** |

I heard of a similar experiment where the increase in iron increased bacteria growth, and actualy increased co2. Wayne Sallee http://members.aol.com/waynesallee/weblink.htm |
