Soft corals are probably less demanding if you're not going all out on

in an absolute rage when they hear the word because they had such a
hard time eradicating them. :)

If you're serious about it, pick up Corals by Eric Borneman - it's the
most comprehensive book I ever read out of school. :)

As Rikko also wrote, soft corals seem to be known as more hardy.
Leather corals and mushrooms would be worth looking at.

Also, if you decide to make a big move in this direction, see Jeff's
Exotic Fish for their 9 for $99 deal - it's a great (i.e. inexpensive)
beginner deal for some more common corals. Of course, you'll probably
have to pay $60 in shipping, but still, it comes out to $18/coral, when
they are often much more. They send decent sized corals, too. You just
need to be careful and do some research, because from their list it's
easy to mix hard/soft, aggressive/non-aggressive.

I'm definitely a beginner and I have good success (so far) with:

mushroom leather corals
sarcophyton
bubble
euphyllia anchora
catalaphyllia
brains
sinularia

I have another one that I don't know the name of. It's like a disc of small
stalks (each approx 1/4" diameter). Out of each stalk comes a "flower" so
that the whole thing looks like a dinner plate full of small creamy coloured
flowers.

i have a Goniopora and have heard the same thing but it seems to be doing
well as of now.

Should also add Coralliomorphs are doing very well, as are Gonioporas
although a number of people have told me that they don't last very long.

My LFS called it a "Duncan Opsomnia" but I don't think it's the right name,
because I can't find any reference to it. I'll post a picture in the next
couple of days.
