Yo-Yo loach growth rate
 

I'm officially excited. I was in my LFS yesterday to get
some more Neon Tetras and saw they had Yo-Yo loaches. I
bought the Neons and went home, thought about it, debated
with myself, then gave in to impulse and went back for two
loaches. They are so cute! They are now in my 20 G long
tank. They weren't very shy and seemed to adjust to their
new environment quickly.

I know they will get to 3-4" eventually, but how long is
that? I'm still quite new to loaches, have 2 Skunk botia I
bought about 2 months ago. Do they tend to grow quickly or
slowly? The reason I ask is I'm probably looking at yet
another tank upgrade, but having just upgraded in the past
several months, it will be next year before I go for a
larger tank.

I second that. Mine tiny baby yo-yos were 3" in a year -- and 4" and fat
within another year.

I also have skunk loaches that started out at just 1" last year and are
about 2-1/2" this year. The large one seems bigger than that.

Fairly quickly. They'll be full size well within a year IME.
Much quicker than clown loaches.

Be careful, skunk botias are nasty fish, very aggressive. I'm not sure they'll
get along with the yoyos.

Next year should be fine, depending of course on the bioload of your current
tank.

The growth rate of these fish is very dependant on the availability &
types of food provided. A diet of flake food might achieve almost no
perceptible growth, while a tank full of snails with a diet of brine
shrimp & bloodworms will cause a grown rate which will might make you
start worrying about your Neon's safety ;~)

To cite an example, if I drop 2 Yoyos juveniles (1.5") in a tank full of
snails, the first one to figure out that snail=escargot=food will be
noticeable larger in just one week, as compared to his partner. In 2
months, if only one is eating snails, there will be an inch difference
between them (almost double the size difference).

How much did you pay for them?

I live in Australia and saw them for the first time in my LFS! they were
AUD$95!~! (about us$60) that is like 5-6 times as much as a clown loach! as
much as i wanted 2 it was very hard to spend that much money on them !

I was told they are real rare in Australia so the price is so high.

Would be interested to see how much they are in the US or where they r more
commonly available.

Yoyos retail here between $6 and $9cdn ($4-6US), depending on size and
the quantity I'm willing to buy (the more I order, the less water I need
to tranship per fish). I'm surprised you are paying so much, being so
close to Singapore, which is where I tranship mine from. Clown loaches
retail between $5 and $10cdn (depending on the season), but they are
typically slightly more than Yoyos. Zebra loaches are my most expensive,
typically $8-9cdn. Someone might be feeding you a line on the Yoyos ;o)
line, string, yoyo, get it? *groan*

Now Boesmani rainbows are expensive here, (retail around $13-15cdn). I'd
hope you could get these for less than me.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. The yo-yos are in one tank, the
skunks are in a different tank.

Thanks for the info. I feed a variety of foods, including
frozen brine shrimp & frozen blood worms, sinking pellets,
shrimp pellets, algae tablets, Betta bits, even flake food
(not all at once!).

The two I bought were US$3.99 each + tax of about 8.3% (or
whatever TX tax currently is). I would have been willing to
pay more, but not US$60!
