I think you had said you were having problems with algee, i was at the pet
store, which i have to go back to today, but they have this pad you i think
put with your filter (says for fresh,salt, ponds) and it reduces algee its
called Phosphate Reducing Filter Pad, I looked it up when i got home and
here is the info, I dont know if it helps with the same kind of algee you
were having but thought about you when i seen it.

I've used these myself but it never seems to be enough. I'm trying a
resin I saw: Doc Foster and Smith "PhosPure". But no matter what I do my
Phosphate level is always off the scale. (I have very soft and acidic well
water which is GREAT for my Discus but loaded with phosphate out of the
tap.)

50% water changes every other day if I can manage it and a sweep with a
Diatom filter the other day is the only way I can keeps things in check.

Kinda off topic but while the Diatom filter works great the
instructions on how to use and clean it are TERRIBLE. Anyone else have this
problem? After reading them over and over and trying to follow the small
convoluted diagrams I finally just gave up and messed around until I got it
working. Great filter though, once it does work. Perfect for polishing the
water the day before guests come over. Everyone heads to the tank and ooohs
and ahhhs!

But 2 days later green water if I don't filter and water change!

My city adds some phosphate to the water to prevent pipe corrosion. Now
that I'm dosing potassium nitrate as espoused by Richard Sexton, the
aquarium plants grow like crazy and there's little algae.

Constant giant water changes don't sound good. Perhaps lots of plants
plus nitrate dosing would help you too?

Both. If your fish actually produce enough nitrate for your plants, you
dose only potassium.

Potassium and nitrate both help the plants grow to use up the phosphate,
and you may also need to dose some iron/ trace element mix. With very
soft water like yours, it may be desirable to dose a Kh booster too, at
least at water change time. Because the plants use your phosphate, algae
problems should be reduced.

I'm dosing potassium nitrate, potassium sulphate, trace elements/ iron,
all from the hydroponics store, and Hagen pHStabilze Kh Booster - a
bottled aquarium chemical.

Why not install an UV to kill the algae?

Concerning green water: the reason it comes back so soon if you didn't get it
all. If you remove one pound, say, of suspended alage spores that make
up green water then there are still two pounds of the stuff lurking in
the substrate and what have you. Keep filtering (you CAN leave the
filter on 24x7) and keep stirring up the gravel. WHen youi just CAN'T
get any more crud into the water my stirring things up then you've
got most of it. Now to a bunch of daily 50% water changes - for about
a week. Then you'll be rid of it - probably - for good.

That's what works for me, anyway.
