Nerites eat Hygrophila?!?
 

Grumble. Supposedly Nerites don't eat plants. *looks over at Richard*
I added three "tiger nerites" to my planted tank and the older leaves
on my Hygrophila difformis are now lace. They look almost like these:

I've not caught the snails on the plant, but this is too rapid and
severe to be a nutrient problem and it looks like snail damage.

Anybody want three really cool looking, overpriced snails? I'm
considering escargot for dinner tomorrow evening.

Hi Altum,

So you got rid of this ugly "vegetable", but I would not blame the snails.
In my tanks, they do not touch even the most fragile plants, but they are
quite useful in removing film algae from the glass. Better keep them.

ROFLMAO! I'm 100% sure the snails are eating the wisteria. Maybe I
have a different species of snail. It's clearly snail damage and is
getting a lot worse. Lack of potash looks similar, but the H.
polysperma always shows pinholes when I forget to dose and it's doing
fine. They're not touching anything else.

Maybe it isn't too bad. The wisteria is spreading everywhere on long
runners along the gravel. I was enjoying watching it grow because I've
never had any luck with it before. I guess I can replant with grasses
or crypts now that the gravel bed has more nutrients in it. I'll have
baby uruguayensis swords soon enough - there's a flowering stalk on one
outside.

No, Neritina natalensis don't eat plants, unless by plants you mean
Cladophora algae, their preferred food.
I suspect you have a completely different species of snail - could you
post a picture?

They're _exactly_ like the snail on Richard Sexton's site - his picture
is far better than anything I could take.

I'm starting to wonder whether I the hygrophila isn't showing a
nutritional deficiency that coincidentally happened at the same time as
I put in the snails. I always see the nerites on the glass and bogwood,
and never on any of the plants. There are a few common ramshorns in the
tank, and ramshorns will usually work on damaged leaves. I have MTS in
there too, but I've never seen them eat plants.

I've started dosing more potash and I'll see what happens.
